NewsShed: Troubled water, and a few bridges

Trailbuilders of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference spent their Saturday rebuilding a bridge on the Long Path in Platte Clove. For more photos of the rebuild -- and an idea of how badly the bridge needed an upgrade -- see the NY-NJTC's photo album of the rebuild.

Happy Monday, Catskills! We hope your sump pumps are working.

So far, last week's rain has shown no sign of going away. It was a soggy weekend across the Catskills, with a few outbreaks of flash flooding around the region.

The Sullivan County village of Woodridge got some flooding on Sunday, and the Times Herald-Record got a dramatic photo of a telephone pole floating across Greenfield Road.

Delaware and Schoharie escape recent flooding, but under disaster declaration

Brooklyn's BookCourt plans a literary mecca in the Catskills

Zack Zook, the 28-year-old son of the founders of the Brooklyn-based BookCourt bookstore, wants to build the "ultimate literary destination" in the middle of a cow pasture in the Catskills. He is one of many booksellers to dream of making Delaware County, three hours north of New York City, a bibliophile's paradise.

In May, BookCourt launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $300,000 to launch a northern outpost of its Brooklyn location, dubbed BookCourt North.  Zook asked Brooklyn-based writers and authors to pitch in to buy the barn that currently houses the Bibliobarn, a used bookstore that has occupied the 19th-century structure since 1996, and to add accommodations for writers, a cafe, regular event programming, and "writers' sheds" dotting the five acres that come with the property.

Rosendale Trestle reopens Saturday after a $1.5 million makeover

Above: A Poughkeepsie Journal video about the re-opening of the newly restored Rosendale Trestle.

Rail trail lovers, rejoice: On Saturday, June 29, the Rosendale Trestle, a 118-year-old span over the Rondout Creek, will be reopened to public walking access, thanks to the restoration efforts of the Wallkill Valley Land Trust and the Open Space Institute.

Trail fans will be celebrating the reopening of the bridge at Willow Kiln Park on Saturday, with live bluegrass, a silent auction, a yard sale, and tie-dyeing "Track The Trestle" T-shirts. Or, if you like, you can join the throngs on the bridge, marveling at the views of Joppenburgh Mountain and the Shawangunk Ridge and basking in the cool 55-degree air rising up from the Rondout Creek, 150 feet below your feet.

Bounty of the County: Chefs and local farmers join forces for Irene relief

Two years after the Irene and Lee floods ravaged the Schoharie Valley, there's still a lot of work to be done to make the valley whole.

But there's also a lot to celebrate: Across the region, farmers' fields that were torn up by floodwaters are now green and growing again. On Saturday, June 29, Albany chefs and Schoharie Valley farmers team up at the Carrot Barn in Schoharie for an Irene recovery fundraiser that celebrates not only the region's resilience, but its top-notch produce.

The event, dubbed "Bounty of the County," will feature a six-course dinner prepared by top-notch chefs from the Albany Chefs' Food and Wine Festival. On the menu, as the name suggests, will be fruit, vegetables, local meat and more from Schoharie Valley farms, each of which took a beating from Irene and lived to tell the tale. Ingredients will be sourced from Schoharie Valley Farms, Barber's Farm, Wellington's Herbs and Spices, Bohringer's Fruit Farm, Shaul Farms, Mariaville Farms, West Wind Acres, Parson's Farm, and Sunnycrest Orchards.

Catskills get a new map -- and a few park upgrades

This week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced $17 million in new spending on New York's state parks and public lands. The Catskills region is getting its fair share, with upgrades planned at some of the region's popular state-run campgrounds.

NewsShed: Rain, trains and windsock campaigns

Andes's newest business is looking pretty green. Photo by "Story Laurie" McIntosh, who writes: "Morena of Grayson's Organics, selling fresh garlic scapes, salad greens and baby garlic to Annette, a happy customer. The farm store is at 27 Delaware Ave., Andes, NY (2 doors up from the blinking light). She'll be open Thur-Sat ~11-6 (except [today]. sorry), and will also have lots of herbs to sell...and soon Mexican food, good coffee...and more good stuff! Go meet Morena & buy some greens."

Good morning, Catskills!

On tap for today: More rain. The weather geeks at Hudson Valley Weather are getting excited today about "orographic lift" -- a phenomenon that involves clouds cooling down and releasing rain as they are pushed up the sides of mountains. Guess which mountains they're talking about.

The littlest class of '13

The Andes Central School Class of 2013. Photo from the district's Facebook page.

Last weekend, the hills echoed to the strains of "Pomp and Circumstance," as graduation ceremonies were held in schools large and small around the Catskills region.

The smallest? Andes Central School, a little Delaware County one-building school district that proudly graduated nine seniors last Friday.

On the other end of the spectrum was Kingston High School, whose Class of 2013 numbered 457.

Somewhere in the middle: Coxsackie-Athens High School, whose 121 graduates this year earned the distinction of the highest graduation rate in the school's history.
