Bald eagles and cement mixers coexist peaceably at the Gilboa Dam

Weighing in at over 230 million pounds of concrete, with a $400 million price tag and a crew of over 100 workers, the restoration of New York City's Gilboa Dam at the Schoharie Reservoir is the largest and most ambitious construction project currently underway in the Catskills.

Not all the dam's regular visitors are on the payroll. In 2011, with work at the dam already well underway, a pair of bald eagles began building their nest nearby.

"That freaked everybody out. They did not expect eagles to start building a nest in the middle of a construction zone," said Peg DiBenedetto, a DEP employee who has been tasked with keeping a close eye on the eagles. "They built the nest in a vital part of the site."

For the last two years, DiBenedetto has watched the nest, taking careful daily notes on the eagles' behavior to make sure the construction isn't disturbing them.

They've been burgling on the railroad (allegedly)

Two Herkimer County men were arrested recently after they were caught red-handed stealing railroad spikes and spike plates from the Canadian Pacific Rail line in Richmondville, according to a statement from the New York State Police.

On Friday, May 31, state troopers responded to a report of a Pontiac driving east on the Canadian Pacific rail right-of-way near Raven Road. Arriving on the scene, troopers found one man loading railroad spike plates into the open trunk of a tan Pontiac Grand Am, and another man in the driver's seat. In the trunk, troopers found steel spike plates, spikes and J-hooks.

Arrested on the scene were 32-year-old Eric S. Markwardt of Dolgeville and 36-year-old Matthew E. Victor of Salisbury Center. A military contractor from Hunter was among three Americans who were shot and killed on Saturday on an Afghan army base in the Pakikta province of Afghanistan, several news outlets are reporting.

The Afghan soldier who opened fire on the three Americans was also shot and killed in the incident, the paper reports.

News of the shootings was first reported on Saturday, by an AP report that did not include the names of the Americans who were killed. The incident was one of a series of recent "insider attacks" by Afghan troops against each other or their international allies, reporter Kay Johnson writes:

Governor Andrew Cuomo's rush to pass an ambitious new corporate tax break program met with skepticism from an audience of Delaware County officials and business owners at SUNY Delhi on Thursday.

With only eight days to go in the current state legislative session, Cuomo hopes to get lawmakers to pass Tax-Free NY, a sweeping tax program that would lift taxes on corporations and their employees if they create new jobs within one mile of any SUNY campus.
