Delhi kayaker drowns in West Branch

A 21-year-old Delhi man drowned on the West Branch of the Delaware River on Tuesday after he fell from his kayak.

Around noon on Tuesday, according to a news release from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, local first responders and police responded to Sherwood Bridge just south of the village of Delhi after a 911 call was made reporting a possible drowning. Donald Shamus had fallen from his kayak and been swept away by the current, a witness who was kayaking with Shamus told responders.

After searching for over an hour on foot and by helicopter, responders found Shamus about half a mile south of the confluence of the West Branch and Little Delaware rivers. An attempt was made to resuscitate Shamus while he was transported to O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, but it was unsuccessful. Shamus was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Steve Hood, assistant chief of Delhi Fire and EMS and deputy director of Delaware County Emergency Services, was one of dozens of first responders on the scene Tuesday afternoon. Hood said that the West Branch was running high after a series of recent rainstorms.

A controversial plan to convert Ulster County's old rail corridor into a walking trail from Kingston to Highmount got a boost on Monday, with the release of a new study of the trail's potential economic impact.

If built, the Catskill Mountain Rail Trail would allow hikers and bikers to go all the way from downtown Kingston to the Belleayre Ski Center, with access to the old Ulster & Delaware right-of-way that runs alongside the Ashokan Reservoir, currently closed to foot traffic. For trail advocates, it would be the realization of a long-held vision for the future of tourism and outdoor recreation in the region.

Middleburgh and Cairo-Durham school budgets go back to the polls

On Tuesday, June 18, voters in two Catskills school districts will have another chance to vote on school budgets that failed to pass in the regular election on May 22.

The Middleburgh Central School District, whose budget failed by just 25 votes in May, has proposed a revised budget that cuts spending by an additional $88,000 compared to the rejected budget. The new cuts will eliminate all field trips for the year, and make reductions in non-teaching positions. The new budget increases the tax levy in the district by 2.68 percent compared to last year.

In the Cairo-Durham Central School District, whose budget was also narrowly rejected by voters in May, the budget is also up for a re-vote. According to the Daily Mail's report, the school board did not reduce spending when revising their budget, but opted to use $60,000 from district coffers to reduce the tax levy increase from 4.23 percent to 3.73 percent.

Route 28 closed between Delhi and Meredith

A six-mile stretch of Route 28 was closed to traffic late Monday night due to downed power lines on the road, according to an alert posted on 511-NY by the New York State Department of Transportation.

The alert stated that as of 10:58pm Monday, Route 28 was closed from the intersection with Route 10 (Delhi's Main Street) to Turnpike Road in Meredith, with downed power lines at both ends of the road. Intense thunderstorms moved quickly through the region Monday afternoon, leaving downed trees in some areas.

The road was expected to be closed until 7am Tuesday morning.

A segment of Route 28 near Broadstreet Hollow Road in Shandaken was also closed down on Monday between around 5:30pm and 7pm, due to a downed tree.

Delaware County drug sweep nets eight arrests

A five-month investigation into local drug activity in Delaware County has netted eight arrests, county police announced today. Five women and three men were arrested recently and charged with a variety of heroin- and prescription-drug-related offenses.

According to a statement from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, the arrests were made after a county grand jury handed down a number of sealed indictment warrants on Friday, June 14. The investigation and arrests were carried out by sheriff's deputies along with the Delaware County Probation Department, the Walton and Sidney village police departments, the Chenango County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police.

The investigation is ongoing, and undersheriff Craig DuMond said more arrests are pending.

Mudslide closes Huntersland Road in Middleburgh

As if torrential rains and a flooded-out downtown on Friday weren't bad enough: Huntersland Road in Middleburgh is shut down until further notice, after a mudslide in the wee hours of Sunday morning forced the closure of the road.

YNN reports that the road -- an important route for local traffic and county vehicles -- is expected to be out of commission for at least the next few days

Information on the extent of the damage and the timeframe for repairs was not immediately available on Monday, as Schoharie County Department of Public Works commissioner Dan Crandell was working at the site with a crew of DPW employees and could not be reached.
