Man killed after ATV flips on top of him in High Falls

A 68-year-old man driving an all-terrain vehicle on a wooded trail in High Falls died on Sunday, Dec. 14 after his ATV flipped over, pinning him beneath it, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.

Bruce Turner, a 68-year-old Stone Ridge resident, was found unconscious under a Yamaha Grizzly 350 ATV on an inclined section of the trail at 7:04 a.m. on Sunday morning, a press release from the Sheriff's Office states.

First responders pulled the ATV off Turner and performed CPR. Turner was then taken to HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston, where he died of his injuries, police say.

Hundreds of Santas raise thousands of dollars at Windham Mountain

Windham Mountain invited Santa Claus to ski for charity on Sunday, Dec. 12, and 300 Santas answered the call. Hundreds of skiers wearing red and white received a free lift ticket and paid $20 apiece.

The fees--over $6,000 in all--were donated to the Windham Community Food Pantry, along with a matching $2,000 donation from the ski center, according to a video released by Windham Mountain.

Naked man spent 14 hours outside in Summit, prompting helicopter search

A 28-year-old man wearing nothing but a pair of boots turned up on the porch of a residence in Summit after spending 14 hours naked outside on Sunday, Dec. 7, police say.

"You've never seen a guy shake that much in your whole life," said Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond, whose office helped with the search.

The man, who is not being identified, was reported missing by his family at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, prompting a large search of an area near Charlotte Valley Road in Schoharie County, according to a press release from the New York State Police.

$15 million in grants go to Catskills organizations

Gov. Andrew Cuomo handed out early Christmas presents on Thursday, Dec. 11 in the form of $709.2 million in economic and community development funding to hundreds of organizations across New York state. Several Catskills organizations, including MTC Cable, Catskill Mountainkeeper and the village of Sidney, received over a million dollars each. 

Through the program, called the Regional Economic Development Council initiative, New York State issues grants to businesses, community groups, nonprofits, and municipalities. The Catskills did well this year, picking up over $15 million overall, according to our back-of-the-envelope math.

Man killed in Hamden crash

A 48-year-old Walton man died on Tuesday, Dec. 9 after the vehicle he was driving veered off the road and into a tree in the Delaware County town of Hamden, according to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

Kelvin J. McKnight was driving north on Route 10 near the intersection of County Highway 26 when his vehicle swerved to the left and drove off the highway, a Sheriff's Office press release states. James C. Spain, a 23-year-old from Walton, was also in the vehicle. McKnight was transported to O’Connor Hospital in Delhi, where he died from injuries sustained in the crash, police say.

Spain was transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton for evaluation and treatment. Deputies were assisted at the scene by both Delhi and Walton Fire Departments and EMS Squads, the release states. The accident remains under investigation.

During storm, power surge caused smoking electrical outlets in Middleburgh

A power surge during a large snowstorm caused electical outlets to smoke and pop in six houses in the Schoharie County town of Middleburgh early on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Beginning at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the Middleburgh Fire Department began receiving panicked 911 calls from residents on Huntersland Road, Possum Hill Road, Brooky Hollow Road and East Hill Road, said Middleburgh Fire Chief Michael Devlin.

Prattsville bridge over Schoharie Creek to be replaced

The steel truss bridge that carries Route 23 over the Schoharie Creek in the Greene County town of Prattsville is slated for replacement in 2016, according to the New York State Department of Transportation, which is holding a public meeting about the bridge on Thursday, Dec. 11 at the Prattsville Community Church at 6:30 p.m.

The bridge, which was built in 1927, has been repaired several times in the past decade, most recently in 2012 after workers found a crack in its steel, according to the Mountain Eagle.

This Weekend: Community pantry fundraiser at the Peekamoose

This Sunday, the Peekamoose Restaurant & Tap Room is throwing a fundraising bash for the Community Pantry, the food pantry that serves the Delaware County town of Middletown.

The Community Pantry was founded three years ago in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. Since then, it's grown from serving 40 families to serving 360 families, according to its organizers.

Help them help feed even more folks by buying a ticket to the Peekamoose's buffet dinner and an afternoon of promised "musical surprises."

Five tractor trailers and two cars collide on Route 17; 65-year-old woman killed

Icy road conditions early on the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 9 caused a collision involving five tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles that killed 65-year-old Stella Sapio of New York City, New York State Police say. 

The crash occurred in the westbound lane of Route 17 near exit 110 in the Sullivan County town of Thompson around 3:17 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to a press release issued by the State Police.

Sullivan County Commissioner of Public Safety Richard Martinkovic was on the scene of the crash on Tuesday.

The first 911 call came in at 3:48 a.m., reporting that a passenger vehicle had slid into a guardrail, Martinkovic said. A state trooper was dispatched, and then a series of other 911 calls came in, reporting that tractor trailers had become involved in the crash.
