Sullivan County traffic stop takes a violent turn

Sullivan County sheriff's deputy Joseph Gagliardo was injured on Saturday in White Lake, when his patrol car was rammed by a pick-up truck the deputy was trying to stop for speeding.

The Catskill Scoop has, well, the scoop:

When Deputy Gagliardo activated his lights and siren, the pick up truck ignored him and proceeded south on State Route 55. The Deputy was eventually able to pull in front of the truck, which was a Ford F150, and get it stopped. Just as the deputy was about to exit his vehicle, the pick up truck backed up several feet and then lurched forward ramming the marked patrol car. Stunned, the deputy put the patrol car in park and attempted to get his seat belt off when, the pick up backed up again and struck the patrol car a second time, pushing it over 100 feet down the road.

Arrested in the incident, and charged with assault, criminal mischief and driving while intoxicated, was 23-year-old Jeffrey Santiago-Pabon of West Virginia.

When she was just ten years old, Taylor Allison was already donning full-body armor to race mountain bikes down the steep, shale-strewn slopes of Plattekill Mountain. Now, at 16, the Roxbury teenager says she's currently the youngest female pro in her sport: After a first-place win at Killington last year, Allison made the jump to the competitive world of pro cycling.

On Sunday, June 24, she'll have the chance to test her mettle against a few other up-and-coming bikers. Allison has been chosen as one of the forerunners to open up the course for the women's downhill mountain biking race at the Windham Mountain Bike World Cup.

Watershed Post: How did you get started riding?

Taylor Allison: My father and brother did it, and it sort of evolved into a family sport. I just fell in love with it.

WP: Tell me about how you went pro. How did you know you were ready?

Car flips three times on Olive road

A speeding car flipped three separate times after failing to negotiate a turn on Krumville Road in Olive late Wednesday night, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said.

Trevor M. Carpanzano, a 29-year-old resident of Olivebridge, was heading south on Krumville Road near the intersection with Vly Road when “excessive speed caused his vehicle to roll…before coming to rest upright on the northbound shoulder of the roadway,” a press release from the Sheriff's Office said.

Carpanzano suffered a possible broken arm and several facial and arm lacerations and was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Flower Hill. He was issued two tickets for speed not reasonable nor prudent and failure to keep right.

Ulster County Deputies reported the accident, and were assisted by members of the Department of Environmental Protection, Olive Fire Department and Olive First Aid Squad.

Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds come home to roost

Above: Video for "Another Ride," from Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds' new album, "Pound of Dirt." Frontwoman Arleigh Kincheloe says that the visuals for the video were inspired by the Margaretville Carnival.

In a Delaware County locale the size of Halcottsville (it counts its population in the dozens), Arleigh Kincheloe's voice was no secret. At 16, she was drafted to open for guitarist Leo Kottke at the West Kortright Centre, where fresh young local talent is often paired with the bigger names who come through.

“Somebody backed out, and one of the directors had heard me sing with my parents' band," Kincheloe says. "I got up there and sang a few songs. It'll be fun to be back with this whole big operation.”

The “whole big operation” would be Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, which Jeff Miers described in a rave review in the Buffalo News last week:

Julian Schreibman looks past primary to a showdown with Gibson

On Tuesday, June 26, Julian Schreibman will face opponent Joel Tyner in a primary to run on the Democratic ticket in this November's Congressional election. The winner will challenge Republican incumbent Chris Gibson, who currently represents New York's 20th District, in the race to represent the newly redrawn 19th Congressional District.

Schreibman spoke to the Watershed Post as part of our series of interviews with the candidates for the new 19th Congressional District, which spans the Catskills and Hudson Valley regions. The state's new Congressional districts were drawn by a panel of federal judges, after state legislators failed to agree on district lines.

To compare New York State's new Congressional district lines with the old ones, check out this interactive map from the New York Times.
