Deposed Middletown judge Glen George loses appeal to clear his name

A former Middletown town justice who was removed from office by a state commission, and accused of favoritism and ticket-fixing, has lost his appeal to have his removal from office overturned.

In a 6-1 decision issued on Dec. 10, the New York State Court of Appeals ruled to uphold a decision by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct in the case of Middletown justice Glen George, who was removed from office and accused of judicial misconduct in May.

In their decision to remove George from office in May, the majority of the 11-member commission cited two cases in which they felt the judge had showed favoritism to personal friends. In one case, George dismissed a traffic ticket for a friend and former employer without disclosing their personal connection; in another, George told a landowner who was considering a lawsuit against another of George's friends that he would be unlikely to win his case.

Snow on the way to the lower Hudson Valley

In the forecast for the lower Hudson Valley today: Heavy snow, with the chance of more than six inches accumulating in some spots, according to the folks at Hudson Valley Weather. There's a winter weather advisory on for Orange and Rockland counties west of the Hudson, and also across the river in Putnam and Westchester counties

The Catskills region will see some snow, but not as much as our neighbors to the south and east. An inch or two at most is expected in the region, with the heaviest accumulations forecast for Ulster County.

Local school districts are taking heed, and quite a few schools in Ulster and Sullivan counties are closed for the day.

Hancock family evacuates after pipeline accident

A family on Hungry Hill in the Delaware County town of Hancock was forced to evacuate their home for the night on Thursday, December 5, after workers building the new Millennium Pipeline natural gas compression station knocked on their door and told them there had been an accident on the site.

The station in Hancock has been under construction since October, and is being built to increase pressure and gas output on the Millennium Pipeline, which stretches across New York State's Southern Tier from Steuben County to Rockland County.

According to Millennium spokesperson Steve Sullivan, workers on the site were connecting another line to the main line when something went awry, forcing the workers to vent millions of gallons of gas from a 10-mile-long stretch of 30-inch pipeline into the atmosphere.

"They needed to vent the gas for safety purposes," Sullivan said. "It was a mechanical issue."

There was no fire at the site, Sullivan said. He said that the family was advised to leave their house for their own safety.

Judge orders Hanover Farms shut down

In a fierce legal battle between the town of Shandaken and a popular Route 28 farmstand that has been flouting local zoning law for many years, the town recently won a major victory.

In a decision issued on Nov. 27, Acting Supreme Court Justice Mary Work ruled that Hanover Farms must cease all operations at the farmstand on Route 28 in Mount Tremper, and must not open the farmstand unless the town grants the business a permit. Hanover Farms' owners also have 60 days to take down a roughly 2,200-square-foot new retail space that was built to expand the farmstand last year -- a building project that owner Al Higley carried out despite several stop work orders issued by the town of Shandaken in March of 2012

Farmers, brewers, chefs, retailers: Add your free online listing to the Catskills Food Guide

Above: A rooster from Horton Hill Farm in Jefferson casts a discerning eye on the Watershed Post's 2014 Catskills Food Guide. Thanks to Horton Hill Farm for the photo.

In the local economy, businesses don't stand alone. They form relationships with each other; they create connections.

We built our online Catskills Food Guide with those connections in mind. If you own a restaurant that sources produce from local farms (like the Peekamoose Restaurant & Tap Room in Big Indian), or if you're a producer whose foods can be found at local stores (like Bread Fellows in Andes), you can use our online listings to reflect those relationships -- and to let your customers know who else you're connected to locally.

NewsShed: New life on local Main Streets

Above: Middleburgh's newest business, Valley Tax and Accounting, which opened at 296 Main Street on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Downtown Middleburgh was devastated by flooding from Irene and Lee, and recovery has been a long process. But with several new businesses on Main Street -- and a new brewery set to open its doors in 2014 -- things are looking up in Middleburgh. In a press release, Valley Tax owner Francis Pipcynski says he's proud to be part of the comeback:

"We are pleased to be here and be part of the rebuilding process after such widespread devastation. What has impressed us so much is that after what seemed like a knock out punch, the residents and business owners did and continue to do whatever is necessary to get back on their feet."

How to buy local meat in the Catskills

To buy local meat in the Catskills, you've got to know where to look. But the extra effort pays delicious dividends -- like this grass-fed ribeye from Liddle Farm in the Delaware County hamlet of Halcottsville. Photo from the Facebook page of AgriForaging, Inc., a local farm consulting business.

Buying locally raised meat is more complicated than buying vegetables, partly because sales of pork, beef, lamb, poultry and goat are subject to different sets of regulations.

The robbery occurred around 11 p.m. at 1975 Route 32, according to a news release from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office. One of the robbers showed a handgun, and the pair robbed a clerk of cash and property before escaping on foot across Route 32. No one was injured, police say.

Police believe the robbery was carried out by a man and a woman, but had no further description of the two robbers.

An investigation is underway. Police are urging anyone with information to call the county sheriff's office at 845-338-3640, email [email protected] or contact the police via their Facebook page.
