Christine Becker, 62, of 4062 Route 212, was arrested about 3 p.m. and charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon and with a violation of the state’s mental health law “as a danger to herself,” said state police Senior Investigator Stan O’Dell. He said police recovered the handgun.

Two victims identified in fatal Route 9W crash

A head-on collision between two BMWs on Route 9W in Highland claimed two lives early Saturday morning. The crash, which was widely reported by local media outlets, shut down 9W for hours.

Today, the Town of Lloyd Police Department identified the two victims: 50-year-old Wayne Donaldson of Highland, who was driving a 1995 BMW, and 51-year-old Tracey Krug, who was driving a 2005 BMW SUV. Neither driver had any passengers in the vehicle at the time of the collision, which occurred around 6:50 a.m. Police say Krug, who was driving southbound, had crossed into the northbound lane at a high speed when her SUV collided with Donaldson's car.

Donaldson was pronounced dead at the scene. Krug was taken to St. Francis Hospital by Mobile Life Ambulance, where she also was pronounced dead.

Sleet and ice accumulating across the western Catskills

Roads in the higher elevations of the Catskills are dangerously slick tonight, especially in the western Catskills counties of Delaware and Sullivan, where the National Weather Service's Binghamton office has issued a special weather bulletin about bands of snow and sleet moving through the area

Citizen reports coming into the NWS are indicating many accidents on the roads. Earlier this evening, Delaware County Fire Wire and Emergency News reported that first responders were on the scene at Exit 87 off Route 17 in Hancock, where a car went over the bank.

Four-year-old struck in Kingston hit-and-run

Police are looking for the driver of a car that struck and critically injured a four-year-old child in a Kingston street on Thursday evening, then fled the scene of the accident.

Around 10:10 p.m. on Thursday night, the four-year-old was crossing Koenig Boulevard near Spring Brook Village when he was struck. Police say that witnesses on the scene saw a dark-colored vehicle pulling away from the scene, headed southbound on Koenig Boulevard, but are unsure whether the vehicle was involved in the accident.

Power outages strike in Delaware County

More than 3,100 households in Delaware County were without power this morning, across an area that included most of NYSEG's customers in the towns of Stamford, Kortright and Harpersfield.

As of around 10:45 a.m., a NYSEG power outage map was reporting that 2,452 of the utility's Delaware County customers were without power, including all 706 customers in the village of Stamford, all but a handful of houses in the village of Hobart, and over 90 percent of customers in the towns of Stamford and Harpersfield. By the time of this post, power had already been restored to many households, leaving 1,033 still without power.

The Stamford Fire Department was without power this morning, but they are back online now, Delaware County Emergency Services director Steve Hood told the Watershed Post.

A NYSEG spokesperson could not be reached for comment. Hood said he did not know what had caused the power outages.

Maple Weekend isn't over yet

The great thing about Maple Weekend is that it's actually two weekends.

Yes, you've got another chance this Saturday and Sunday to taste the first syrup of the 2014 maple season at sap houses and sugar bushes around the Catskills region. Try it fresh out of the evaporator, poured over pancakes, or baked into cookies, cakes, and doughnuts.

Pick up a free copy of the Catskills Food Guide while you're at it: our partners at Shaver-Hill Farm, Roxbury Mountain Maple, and the Frost Valley YMCA all have copies onhand to browse during the maple festivities.

Hurley standoff ends in arrest

A man who allegedly barricaded himself in his estranged wife's house in Hurley, threatening to shoot anyone who came in after him, was arrested Wednesday after a three-hour standoff with police.

The man, 45-year-old Edward Dixon of Sawkill Road in the town of Kingston, was wanted by police for an incident that occurred at his wife's house the previous day, according to a news release from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, Ulster County police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the house on Kovacs Drive in Hurley. Dixon was not there when police arrived, but an investigation found that he had entered the house without his wife's permission, fought with her in front of two children, and taken her phone to prevent her from calling 911. Deputies got a warrant for Dixon's arrest.
