Hunkering down in Woodland Valley

Woodland Valley is one of the few neighborhoods in Shandaken where the power is still out today, four days after the storm.

Carol Seitz, the president of the Woodland Community Association, has been blogging about the valley's experience of the storm at the Woodland Valley View. Her account of the Monday night Sandy hit the valley is worth reading in its entirety, but here's a little peek:

A road trip through downstate gas shortages

Headed downstate? Gas up before you go.

On Wednesday afternoon, local filmmaker Jessica Vecchione captured footage for this sped-up film of a drive from upstate New York to New Jersey, via the New York State Thruway, NJ-17 and the Garden State Parkway. Along the way, she finds evidence of plenty of closed gas stations, and long lines of cars waiting to fuel up at the few stations still open.

Hot showers and shelter for Sullivan County

With much of Sullivan County still without power and looking at another few days of power outages, warm shelter and hot showers are becoming more critical.

Sullivan County radio station WJFF announced on Facebook Thursday afternoon that several local schools are offering hot showers:

Sullivan West High School in Lake Huntington will have shower facilities available from 4-8pm tonight. The Jeffersonville school facilities will be available from 5:30-8:00pm.

Liberty High School will make its shower facilities available TOMORROW from 7am-7pm and Saturday from 7am-3pm.

Shelters have been opened at the Sullivan County Community College field house in Loch Sheldrake and the Ted Stroebel building in Monticello.

Information about shelters, dry ice, warming stations and other services is available on an info line set up by the county: 845-807-0800.

Riverkeeper: Oil spill in Kingston's Rondout Creek is worse than officials acknowledge

In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, a petroleum spill has been spotted in the Rondout Creek in Kingston that some believe will have a lasting impact.

Most of the spill has already washed downstream into the Hudson River before it could be cleaned up, witnesses said. Not wanting to wait for officials to clean up the spill, a volunteer crew did their best on Wednesday to remove what still remained of the spill from the creek.

Local residents and members of Riverkeeper reported the spill to the Kingston Fire Department and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and said petroleum has pooled in sections of the creek near the Hudson River Maritime Museum and along Rondout Landing.

Dry ice at Olive Bridge Fire House today until 6pm

Here's the latest update from the town of Olive: There is "plenty" of dry ice available at the Olive Bridge Fire House until 6pm. Clerk to the Olive town supervisor Susan Horner emailed us about it this afternoon:

We just heard from the Shandaken Town Clerk that residents there are in need of dry ice. I listed it on our Website, but if you could but it on your website too that would be great! We have plenty to go around!

We will be manning it till 6pm…Thank you so much!

Here's the full update from their website

The Olive Town Board is scheduling a Dry Ice distribution today at the Olive Bridge Fire House from 12pm – 6pm.

And! The phones are back on at the Town Offices.

Central Hudson is advising us that as of 2pm today, there are 750 people without power in Olive and they believe total restoration will be on Saturday at 10pm.

Sullivan Co. updates dry ice locations, road closures

Sullivan County released updated information this afternoon, listing current road closures, dry ice distribution locations, storm resources, shelters and more.

Note: The information on the county site erroneously lists the Lumberland town hall as a shelter. Watershed Post spoke to Lumberland town supervisor Nadia Rajsz around 3pm. They had just opened the Town Hall as a warming station, and they have about 100 pounds of dry ice to distribute. Also water and hot coffee.

On Sullivan County's back roads, power is slow to return

As another post-Sandy night descended on Sullivan County, thousands were still without power.

The Town of Fremont, in the northwest corner of Sullivan County, was mostly out of electricity, and some roads were still listed as closed. Town councilman John “Jack” Niflot said that Fremont Center, Mileses, and Obernburg were still without power.

Left: CR 94 is barricaded between North Branch and Obernburg.

“There are three trucks up on the River Road by Callicoon and, from what I was told, when they’re done there they’ll be up here,” said Niflot, adding, “Any time like this there’s always outages.”

County Route 94 in Mileses/Hankins (“Hankins Road,” which connects Route 97 to Tennanah Lake Road) and County Route 95 in Obernburg (“Obernburg Road”) were still officially closed on October 31 by Sullivan County.
