Starting today at 4 p.m., Ulster County will be buzzing with humming motors, fried food, and live music as the 125th annual Ulster County Fair begins.

This year, over 45,000 people are expected to wander through the lines of rides and vendors at the Ulster County Fairgrounds in New Paltz by the time the gates close on Aug. 5.

The fair, which is managed and promoted by the Ulster County Agricultural Society is aimed at informing the public in the fields of agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, according to the Ulster County Fair website.

The invasive alga known as "rock snot" continues its march into Catskills trout streams. Today, the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced that Didymosphenia geminata has been found in the Schoharie Creek near Lexington. From a DEC press release:

Samples taken by the U.S. Geological Survey and examined by DEC have confirmed that didymo is present in the Schoharie Creek about 1.8 miles east (upstream) of the hamlet of Lexington. This is the latest recorded incident of this aquatic nuisance species, also called "rock snot,” in New York State.

Up where the air is clear: The view from Mt. Utsayantha

On a clear day, you can see for miles. Christopher Mooney took this shot from atop the fire tower on Mt. Utsayantha in Stamford, looking out over the northwestern edge of the Catskills.

In the early twentieth century, Utsayantha's spectacular view -- and the tragic legend of the Indian princess it was named for -- were a major tourist draw, bringing thousands of picnickers and sightseers to the little village of Stamford every summer. By the 1970s, though, the park atop Utsayantha had fallen into disrepair, and in 1989 the state closed the fire tower. The tower was restored and reopened in 2005, thanks to private donations.

Olly olly oxen free: Storm's over

Fast-moving thunderstorms tore across New York State like a freight train today. In the Catskills, the feared tornadoes never materialized -- though a little further west, they weren't so lucky. Chemung County has declared a state of emergency, and Elmira -- where there were reports of a tornado touching down -- is under a curfew.

The Times Herald-Record reports that a fire destroyed a barn on Route 55 in Swan Lake during the storm, but that firefighters have extinguished it.

Also, they report, the Monticello Police Department is without phone service after a lightning strike, and anyone needing emergency help in Monticello should call 911.
