Breaking news: Newspapers everywhere are unable to resist news about bears in Bearsville.

The Times Herald-Record reports today that a home on Shale Drive in the Woodstock hamlet of Bearsville has been the target of a marauding mother bear and her cubs no less than four times. Jeremiah Horrigan reports:

Following their first bear invasion that Friday, the Knowles family locked the windows and doors and left home for a dinner gathering.

They returned a few hours later to find a kitchen casement window had been torn open, its lock twisted into uselessness. Their home had been trashed all over again.

Cops fight back against the befouling of Kaaterskill Clove

Announced by the state Department of Environmental Conservation today: 60 tickets issued to 21 people, in a crackdown on the increasing problem of illegal, unsafe, and unbelievably gross use of Kaaterskill Clove by swimmers and picnickers.

Recently, the overuse of Kaaterskill Clove, on Route 23A between Palenville and Haines Falls, has become a huge problem. Last week, the Windham Journal reported that local and state officials held a brainstorming session to figure out what to do about the problems at the Clove -- which range from human feces to a sprawl of cars parked in driving lanes to fights and slashed car tires.

The recent tickets, issued between July 7 and 9, span a wide range of offenses: littering, illegal parking, underage drinking, marijuana possession. From today's DEC press release:

The Hunter Mountain ski center has been cited for federal health and safety violations after a federal probe of the death of snow machine operator Brian Mattice in January, the Daily Star reports today.

Reporter Joe Mahoney writes that the ski center faces $8,500 in proposed fines for various violations:

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Hunter Mountain failed to provide workers with training on the "limitations" of using spiked footwear devices to prevent slipping or falling while working near snow gear. The agency also said Hunter did not require its workers to carry radio or communication devices so they could call for help if needed.
