Are you registered to vote in New York State? If not, you have until Friday, October 12 to make sure you're registered to vote in the general election on November 6.

Voters can register in person at their county board of elections, at a Department of Motor Vehicles office, or a state agency-based voter registration center (click here for a list of agencies that accept voter registrations).

Or, if you like, you can mail your voter registration form (embedded below) to your county board of elections: Just make sure it's postmarked by October 12. Forms must be received by October 17 in order to be valid.

Who needs opposable thumbs? Not this bear

Enough with the bears, you say? I couldn't resist: We got this fantastic bear video from Michael DiBenedetto today in which a black bear outsmarts a bear-proof bird feeder by implementing the mechanics of pulleys.

Really. Proof positive that humans aren't the only animals who can understand simple machines.

The video was shot at DiBennedetto's house in Delaware County in 2010. DiBenedetto writes that he sent this video to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, and that "they had never seen anything like it."

"Pretty amazing how he figured out how to get the bird feeder down," he writes. "I thought the bear must have studied the pictures the DEC puts out telling campers how to hang the food in trees."

Rosendale man suspected in string of Ulster County burglaries

DNA evidence has led to the arrest of a man from the Rosendale hamlet of Tillson, 52-year-old William F. Ryan, on multiple burglary charges, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.

Ryan faces charges of third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief, and third-degree grand larceny for a burglary at the PX Express on Route 209 in Rochester, committed in June. He has also been linked to a 2010 burglary at a home in the town of Wawarsing, and faces second-degree burglary and petit larceny charges in that incident.

There may be more charges in store for Ryan, the Times Herald-Record reports:

[Detective Jason] Bruck said Ryan is a suspect in numerous other burglaries and larcenies and an investigation is ongoing.

Ryan was arraigned in the Town of Rosendale and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond, to appear in Rochester and Wawarsing courts at a later date.

The bear photos keep coming

Watershed Post readers sure have seen a lot of bears. We've featured two posts with reader-submitted bear photos so far this month, and more just keep coming in. Here are the latest.

Below, a photo by Brian Albanese, taken by his "stealth cam" on September 26. He writes: "This was taken on Public access land in the Cannonsville Reservoir! I guess you can call them The Cannonsville Cubs!"

Below: A photo by KC Jones, taken on July 13, 2012. "This bear was less than three feet from my front door in Roxbury."

Arsonist targeting flood-damaged homes in Prattsville?

For the third time this year, the Daily Mail reports, a suspicious fire has destroyed a house in Prattsville. The house belonged to Jim Rion, and was in the process of being rebuilt after sustaining significant damage in the Irene floods.

Officials believe that Sunday's fire was an act of arson, and may have been connected to two fires that broke out earlier this year at flood-damaged properties:

A trailer in the local mobile home park and a home in the heart of the hamlet district were destroyed in May and July, respectively.

All three buildings were without power and empty at the time they were apparently deliberately ignited. “We’re pretty sure it’s arson,” Dymond said.

“We can’t say for certain if the three fires are related but all the buildings were abandoned with no electricity turned on,” Dymond said.

Saving the Walton Theatre, one dollar at a time

In June, the Walton Theatre, along with every other small movie theater across the country, received an ultimatum: Convert your 35mm projector to the new digital format by 2013, or the screen goes dark. With most big cinemas already switched to digital, film distributors will no longer ship old-fashioned 35mm reels to theatres.

In an effort to save the silver screen, the Walton Theatre Preservation Association reached out to the community. The task seemed impossible: Raise $70,000 for a new projector in six months. But with a December 31 deadline looming, the effort has already passed the halfway mark. Donations have come from across the country, ranging from hundreds of dollars in checks to a crayon-scrawled envelope with a single dollar in it.

They obtained a ride to the Hudson Valley Mall from a relative, and met with friends. Later, they left the mall on foot. Autumn and her boyfriend began to argue and parted ways. Americana's best and brightest throw Levon Helm an old-fashioned barn-raising

Above: Roger Waters, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Jakob Dylan and others, performing The Band's iconic song "The Weight" at the Izod Center. Video by YouTube user clubdoc.

How many great roots-rockers does it take to save a barn? At least a few dozen -- or so the extended musical family of Levon Helm must have figured, when they decided to throw a big benefit concert at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Helm, a much-beloved figure both locally and globally, died in April. Since then, his nearest and dearest have launched a campaign to preserve The Barn -- the Woodstock property that doubled as a recording studio and the stage for his famous Rambles -- as a musical landmark. The Izod Center show, which was held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, was a fundraiser for that effort.

The New York Times reviewed the show, which was quite a star-studded affair:

When mammoths and mastodons roamed New York

Above: A furry replica of the Cohoes Mastodon, whose skeleton was discovered in 1866 in Cohoes Falls, NY. The Cohoes Mastodon's bones are a jewel in the New York State Museum's display collection; the furry reconstruction in the photo above is on display at the Cohoes Public Library.

Scientists have known for a long time that both mammoths and mastodons once roamed across New York State. But thanks to a study recently published by New York State Museum researchers, we now have evidence that they coexisted.

The New York State Museum announces the results, and explains why they're important:

Kingston-based Guardsman fatally shot by NYPD

Early on Thursday morning, 22-year-old Noel Polanco was shot and killed in the front seat of his car by an NYPD officer, while pulled over for a traffic stop on the Grand Central Parkway. Polanco was a member of the Army National Guard assigned to the 1156th Engineer company, headquartered in Kingston.

The car Polanco was driving had two passengers: Diane DeFerrari, a bartender who worked with Polanco at a bar in Queens, and an unidentified off-duty NYPD officer. Neither was harmed.

The Associated Press reports that DeFerrari describes Polanco's shooting as an act of "road rage":
