Swept away by Irene: Prattsville's records

Prattsville lost a lot more than bricks and mortar in the Irene floods.

The Daily Mail reports that most of the town's financial records for the 2011 fiscal year were destroyed in last year's epic flooding, making a proper audit of the town's books impossible. A recent federal audit of town finances, required because of the amount of money Prattsville has received from FEMA, didn't have much to go on:

Providing background, the report states, “substantially all of the town's books of original entry; the general and subsidiary ledgers; related accounting manuals records such as work sheet and spreadsheets supporting cost allocations; computations and reconciliations; as well as substantially all corroborating evidence in support of the financial statements were destroyed by Hurricane Irene and the subsequent flooding which also destroyed the town's headquarters.

“The scope of our work was not sufficient to enable us to express, and we do not express, an opinion on the financial statements,” the report states.

The Daily Freeman reports that police found over 45 pounds of processed marijuana and more than 60 live plants:

Kaaterskill Falls roars once more

Just a couple of months ago, we were worried about the mighty Kaaterskill Falls, which was reduced to a mere trickle by mid-summer drought. A little rain makes all the difference.

Reader Jennifer Strom sent us this recent photo of Bastion Falls in full roar, half a mile downstream from the Kaaterskill. The photo was taken late Friday afternoon by her husband Bill Strom.

Below: Video taken Saturday at Kaaterskill Falls by Thomas Keane.

Correction: The waterfall in the photo above is Bastion Falls, not Kaaterskill, as we'd originally captioned it. Thanks to John O'Grady for spotting the error.

Five candidates debate Tuesday in race for Sidney town council

In a lot of local elections, it's a challenge to find enough people to run to have a contested election. But not in the Delaware County town of Sidney, where five people are running for two seats on the town council in the November 6 election.

Sidney, whose town council has been divided over gas drilling and other issues in the last couple of years, has two vacant seats on its town council for months. In April, councilman Walter Goodrich died, and several motions to fill his seat did not pass. In June, another council member, Gaby Pysnik -- whose husband David Pysnik died in March -- resigned her seat.

Owl caption contest winner: Pat Guido

Over a dozen people tried their hand at writing a caption for this awesome photo of an Eastern Screech Owl over the weekend.

Choosing a winner was hard, but not that hard, because Pat Guido went the extra mile by having the owl ask a critical question about the mysterious new operator of Belleayre Mountain Ski Center and by actually photoshopping a caption onto the original image. Well done, Pat! Your prize, as promised, is huzzahs all around. ("Huzzah!")

Our second-place choice was a submission by Joyce Spector, who suggested that the caption be "Honey Whoo Whoo," the name of the "newest Catskill reality star."

Thanks to everyone for your caption ideas. We'll do this again sometime soon -- it was fun. Here are all the submissions:

"Did someone say binders full of women?" -- Michael Schulz

I'm nature's noblest screecher! Apologies to Walt Kelly.-- Jim Gibbons

Popular Woodstock doctor pleads guilty to distributing painkillers "without legitimate medical purpose"

On Wednesday, October 17, Doctor Wayne Longmore of Woodstock pled guilty to a federal drug charge that will cost him his medical license and his future at his cash-only Woodstock Walk-In Doctor's Office.

Longmore, a former emergency room doctor whose small-town clinic catered to those without health insurance, was arrested in March and charged with prescribing thousands of hydrocodone (Vicodin) pills "without a legitimate medical purpose."

According to a Daily Freeman article written at the time:

Longmore wrote approximately 9,940 hydrocodone prescriptions between Dec. 15, 2010, and Jan. 17, 2012, accounting for nearly 85 percent of all prescriptions he wrote during that period, according to the complaint. It said approximately 4,520 of those hydrocodone prescriptions were for patients under 35.

Caption this owl

Frieda Suess, of Roxbury, snapped this shot of a severe-looking owl a few days ago. (If we had to guess, we'd say it's a Great Horned Owl. But we may be wrong.) [Update, 10/20/12: I was wrong. It's an Eastern Screech Owl, as many of you -- including the man behind the Hungover Owls blog -- pointed out. Thanks. - JR.]

An owl this serious deserves a funny caption. So help us out: Send us a caption for this owl photo in our first-ever photo-caption-contest. Post your caption as a comment on this post, email it to us at [email protected], or tweet it to us @watershedpost. The winner will get huzzahs all around.

(If you need inspiration for funny owl captions, check out this blog, which is devoted entirely to the concept of "Hungover Owls." Yes, really.)

Update 10/20/12: Thanks for all the captions! Keep sending them. We'll pick a winner on Monday, October 22. -- JR.

Bright Hill Press founder injured in three-car collision

Bertha Rogers, a well-known poet in the region and the founder of the Bright Hill Press and Literary Center in Franklin, was badly hurt in a car accident on Route 6 in the town of Woodbury on Tuesday.

According to an account of the accident from the Mid-Hudson News Network, Rogers was traveling eastbound on Route 6 when another car, which had been rear-ended by a driver distracted by glare, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit Rogers's car. Rogers was trapped in her car and had to be extricated by the Jaws of Life.

The Daily Star reports that Rogers broke both her legs in the accident, and has had surgery to place three pins in her legs. Rogers, who is 71, is beginning to improve, said her husband, Ernest Fishman:
