DEC proposes tighter regulation of outdoor wood boilers

Good news, if you live next door to a giant smoke-belching outdoor wood boiler. Not so good news if you're the one heating your house with it. According to a press release, the DEC is mulling stricter regulations on the devices:

In response to visible air pollution and numerous public complaints, these rules are proposed to reduce the impact of smoke plumes on neighbors. In order to achieve this goal, the new rule includes emission limits on new OWBs to be sold in New York, as well as setting a minimum distance that new OWBs are to be located from neighboring properties. In addition, DEC is proposing certain fuel restrictions, stack height requirements and a nuisance provision for both new and existing outdoor wood boilers.

Margaretville documentary seeks interns

We just got an email from Demon On Wheels director Christina Eliopoulos, who's shooting a documentary about local mechanic Mike Ondish and his bitchin' '68 Shelby Mustang:

I'm seeking out 2 production interns who can assist us from May 3 through May 8 on the first leg of our shoot.

Daily Star: We've got comments

Comments aren't gone, the Daily Star tells us -- the paper has just switched to Disqus for its comment system. Old comments are gone, alas. But their new system is one many newspapers and blogs are using, and.it's got some good features for commenters, like being able to create a single login and profile for any site using the service. Here's an overview from a tech blogger.

Delaware County: Gitter done

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors has unanimously passed a resolution in support of Dean Gitter's Belleayre development project, the Daily Freeman reports. (The story also appears in the Catskill Mountain News, but their content is behind a paywall.)

Tuthilltown vodka: Kosher for Passover

The Jewish Single Malt Whisky Society enjoyed a recent visit to Tuthilltown Distillery in Gardiner:

Gable is one of these super-charming and disarming type guys.  A charismatic dude who knows his business quite well.  Gable went on to provide a tasting of their current line (at least the ones they could legally taste/sell in their tasting room/store):  Hudson New York Corn Whiskey, Hudson Baby Bourbon, Hudson Four Grain Bourbon, Hudson Manhattan Rye, Heart of the Hudson Apple Vodka (twice distilled), Spirit of the Hudson Apple Vodka (thrice distilled).

Their Vodkas, by the way, are Kosher for Passover as they are distilled from apples, not grain — Cheers on that!!

The broken-windows theory of local theaters

Akira Ohiso of Zinc Plate Press snaps a picture of the now-defunct Academy Theater in Liberty, and muses:

Part of the Main Street revitalization of Liberty should include bringing this space back to life.

In a recent profile of the Rosendale Theatre Collective, New York Times writer Peter Applebome posits a simple test for how a town is doing:

One of the best barometers of whether a small town has a pulse is the old downtown movie house. If it has been knocked down, boarded up or turned into a porno place, the omens are not good. If it is hanging in there, that’s promising. If it’s been refurbished or somehow morphed into a beloved institution, chances are the town is just fine.

Daily Star: Where have all the comments gone?

The Oneonta Daily Star unveiled its new website last night, as part of a company-wide push by its corporate parent, Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.

Webmaster Jason Whitney claims it's not that different now...

Whitney said the changes to the site will be mostly cosmetic and organizational, with no major features or sections added or removed from the existing site.

...but we've noticed at least one big feature change: No more comments! Even the old ones have disappeared -- perhaps to the relief of reporter Tom Grace, who has been getting a lot of flak from the online rabble for his coverage of the recent shooting in Cooperstown.

I'm relieved that our links to their older stories still appear to be working. Though it looks like any story older than today has a big banner at the top of it marked "Inactive."

Banks refusing to lend on gas-leased properties?

That's what a tipster claims over at Breathing Is Political:

I had a customer inform me two days ago that the home equity loan they were obtaining in order to purchase a small investment piece near them was turned down by GMAC because their home property was under a gas lease. I dug a little further and found through mortgage brokers that that they are encountering the same reluctance on the part of some local and some bigger banks to lend on leased properties. I hope those who have signed leases have figured this into the equation. A similar example would be as in the case of Flood Zone properties for whom the Flood Insurance program was withdrawn, banks would also not lend on those. In the real estate world, things like this are a huge consideration in factoring property values. Just thought some people might not be aware of this trend by lenders.

In the comments, realtor Jennifer Canfield names lenders she says are not lending on properties with gas leases:

Ferndale company making part of 9/11 memorial

The Times Herald-Record has a look at the steel bases being made by DC Fabrication and Welding:

None of the millions of visitors to the memorial will ever see them.

But they'll be doing their jobs underground, beneath the memorial on the footprint of the Twin Towers, out of the public view.

You might say the whole stunning display will rest on their sturdy legs.
