Letter to the Editor: We need the best Belleayre we can get

Dear editor:

I am Allen Shiner, a full-time resident of Big Indian.

I have no investments in the area.

I don’t own a business.

I do not work in the area.

I do not work for Windham Mt.

I am not a paid lobbyist.

I am a skier at Belleayre. My entire family skis at Belleayre. My daughter had her wedding reception at Belleayre lodge. My wife’s birthday party was at the lodge.

In a recent interview, Odelle Reynolds, an 86 year old from Kingston who worked on the original ski center remarked;

“WE NEED THE BEST BELLEAYRE WE CAN GET”

We need improvements to the ski center and lodging near the base. They go together.

We can not compete with other ski areas.

When my children come with our grandchildren they all stay in our house. But when they want to ski with their friends with families, they have to go to other mountains that have slope-side lodging.

Belleayre's elevation is 1400 feet.

Let me present two examples of other mountains with 750 foot elevations. Half the elevation of Belleayre.

Letter to the Editor: Tired of outdated complaints about the Belleayre Resort

To the Editor:

I, for one am tired of a hysterical few in the Catskill Heritage Alliance raising absurd, outdated complaints about the Belleayre Resort.

The continue to bemoan the "behemoth" resort, despite the fact that the resort has been reduced by 62%.. They insist on labeling it a "self-contained resort built on a mountain top, when that's simply not true. All buildings have been moved off the ridge top. Rather than "sucking in the vitality of the towns and villages," visitors who have a place to stay here are more likely to explore the area instead of day tripping. Resort guests are expected to spend in excess of $10 million annually in the area shops & recreational venues.  Read more

Letter to the Editor: Support the full build out of the Belleayre Ski Center and the revised Belleayre Resort

To the Editor:

The recently posted letter from Bob Axelrod concerning the Belleayre Resort is perplexing.

Where has Mr. Axelrod been for the last six years? It was then, not the other day, that a public/private partnership agreement was announced between NYS DEC and Crossroad Ventures. In response to environmental concerns about the delicate state of the Ashokan Reservoir, the developer sold to the state 1200 acres of privately owned land east of Belleayre Ski Center. Now opponents suddenly want that same fragile area developed with ski trails and lifts. The real strategy here is to start the environmental impact process all over. Mr. Axelrod, apparently, has all the time in the world.

The fact that reviving the Highmount Ski Center takes advantage of existing trails thereby reducing the need to cut trees is overshadowed in Mr. Axelrod’s view by the outrageous notion that visitors who chose to stay adjacent Belleayre Ski Center might have easy access.  Read more

Letter to the Editor: The flaws in the Belleayre Resort's business model

To the editor:

Regarding the resurrected Belleayre Resort, it doesn't take a nobel prize in economics to see the flaws in the developer's business model and projections. Yes, Belleayre needs more lodging options, but timeshares? They are not exactly the hottest investment instrument these days. How many high season weeks can be expected in the future? December and March are iffy -- that leaves January and February and one week long school holiday. How about the high end (underground) spa at the top of narrow, steep, twisty 49A? Are people going to spend big bucks for an underground massage and watercress sandwich? Belleayre needs more lodging units -- not timeshares and not at the top of the ridge. Belleayre also needs new rental equipment and a bigger rental shop. But if prices keep going up which always accompanies expansion, the crowds will stop coming and the antique ski boots may last a few more years.

Letter to the Editor: Let’s turn down the volume and move forward with the Belleayre Resort

Dear Editor:

The Catskill Heritage Alliance has put out the call to their members to come to the Public Hearing May 29, to be bigger, better and, most of all, louder.  Just what we need—another circus.  Before they turn up the volume, I urge you to take a look at their rhetoric.

Despite the fact that the Belleayre Resort has been reduced in size by 62%, they insist on calling it a mega-development.  Despite the fact that buildings have been clustered and moved off the ridge top, they insist on decrying ridge top development.  Despite the fact that our communities have repeatedly sought improved cell service and telecommunications, they have obstructed it.  They’ll tell you that the lack of cell service along Rte 28 is saving lives.  Tell that to emergency responders and the unfortunate person who hits a deer late at night on a lonely stretch of the highway.   Read more

Letter to the Editor: The resort naysayers have views that are irrelevant

To the editor:

The "Belleayre Resort at Catskill Park" naysayers, have views that are irrelevant.

They do not understand today's issues. It is time for the leaders of Save the Mountain, Catskill Heritage Alliance and others who want to block development in a tiny part of the Catskills, to start living and thinking in the present. How ever narrow, but well intentioned their view was fifteen years ago when the Belleayre Resort was first proposed, it is not relevant or realistic now.

At the turn of the century, local employment as well as, tourism, commerce and home values were stable to slightly improving. Then the huge disruption in the national economy in 2008, followed by devastating floods here, have changed everything.

Today, Middletown and Delaware County are slipping. We have been years on a downward slope and our neutral to optimistic future view has turned pessimistic. Today we have housing & land prices -down, wages -down, employment -down, tourism -down, welfare -up, drug use -up, & empty storefronts -up.

Letter to the Editor: Please join the conversation on the 29th!

To the editor:

We, the elected municipal officials of the Towns and Villages in Ulster, Greene and Delaware Counties, are writing to our regional media outlets, DEC and New York State officials in support of the Belleayre Resort at Catskill Park. We represent our municipalities and understand the powerful positive impact - the needed impact – this Resort, and the build-out of Belleayre Mt. Ski Center, can and will have on our area. We have also seen the long, slow and painful decline of our mountain Main Streets and communities. Hunting and fishing licenses in NYS, along with visits to our area, have dropped over 20% in the last 10 years, our population is shrinking, and lodging units are down 90% since the 50s and 60s, let alone a century ago. Additionally the NYC DEP is aggressively purchasing local properties that will forever be un-developable, further limiting our choices and potential to expand and preserve for the next generations of native dwellers.  Read more

Letter to the Editor: Taxpayers should not subsidize a private resort

Dear Editor:

Last week the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation released documents for review of the proposed Crossroads resort and plans for expansion at the Belleayre Mountain Ski Center (http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/90370.html).

The plans for the Ski Center include alternatives that do not tie it in to the proposed resort. These alternatives cost less and return greater benefits to the public than the Full Build Out Alternative, estimated to cost $74 million. The Catskill Heritage Alliance is petitioning the State of New York to save money for taxpayers by pursuing these better and less expensive alternatives.  Read more
