Boil up a hot toddy and call the dog in, the frigid temperatures have finally arrived.  So frigid, in fact, that the National Weather Service out of Binghamton has issued a wind chill advisory for Delaware, Sullivan, Western Ulster, Western Greene counties and parts of the Berkshires beginning running from 7 pm tonight through 7 am tomorrow morning. Wind chills are expected to range from 15 to 24 degrees below zero.  Stay warm and keep those heads covered!

While We Were Away: Juvenile Delinquency Edition

Coxsackie-Athens High School was vandalized late last week by a pair of 13-year-olds. The school was closed at the time for winter recess.

According to the Associated Press, the two boys were apprehended the day after the crimes and have been charged with juvenile delinquency.  Among other crimes that earned them that charge, the two boys graffitied various parts of the school with anarchy symbols (seen here in a video from Albany Newschannel 13), damaged a school vehicle, set the running track aflame after spraying a flammable liquid onto it, broke into the school's concessions building, and lobbed Molotov cocktails at the rear door to the gymnasium.

Hein: "DEP, get off our backs!"

Above: "David and Goliath," a cartoon by Gary Mayer showing Mike Hein as a stone-throwing David to NYC's Golaith, which ran on the Watershed Post a year ago.

Maybe Ulster County Executive Mike Hein is a bona-fide upstate firebrand representing the heartfelt opinions of his constituents. Or maybe he's a craven political opportunist playing on a long-simmering hatred of New York City to rally his upstate voter base.

Either way, Hein is jacking up the volume on an unabashedly popular Catskills sentiment: That the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, which manages the city's reservoir system upstate, is an "occupying nation" in the Catskills.

Armed home invasion in Plattekill

Ulster County sheriff's deputies report that a home on Old Unionville Road in Plattekill  was robbed by armed invaders early this morning. Police say that around 4am, two men entered the house armed with handguns, took some property, and struck one resident in the face before fleeing.

While investigating the incident, Ulster County sheriff's deputies searched a house on South Street in Plattekill, and arrested two men there on drug and weapons charges: 30-year-old Roy E. Nugent and 29-year-old Mark A. Orphan, both of Kingston. But neither was charged with any offense related to the burglary, which is still under investigation.

A press release from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office:

Deputies and Detectives from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office report that they are investigating an armed robbery/home invasion that occurred at approximately 0400 hrs. on 01/02/12 at a residence located on Old Unionville Rd. in the Town of Plattekill.

Animal hospice founder faces cruelty charges

Above: Video footage shot in 2009 by undercover PETA investigator at the Angel's Gate animal hospice in Delhi.

Susan Marino, a 60-year-old Delhi resident and the founder of the Angel's Gate animal hospice, has been arrested on five counts of cruelty to animals and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

A press release from the Delaware County District Attorney's office says that Marino was arrested on Friday, arraigned in Kortright town court, and released on her own recognizance.

Marino's arrest is the result of a covert investigation by an animal-rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

After Marino's arrest last week, PETA immediately issued a blog post declaring "victory," and urging its members to write to state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in an effort to revoke Angel's Gate's nonprofit status and have the animals removed from the hospice.

Landlord murdered in Hurley

A horrific murder of a 54-year-old woman made headlines in Ulster County and across the state last week. On December 21, Ann Gaffney was found beaten to death in her home on Old Route 209 in the Town of Hurley.

According to a press release from the New York State Police, Gaffney was killed during a robbery, and the suspect fled on foot.

Shawn Tyler: New York State PoliceShawn Tyler: New York State PoliceHours later, one of Gaffney's tenants, 34-year-old Shawn E. Tyler, was found hiding on a neighboring property and was arrested as a suspect.

Daily Freeman reporter Ariel Zangla attended a preliminary hearing in the murder case against Tyler yesterday, Tuesday, December 27. According to Zangla's story, a state police investigator testified in court that Tyler had admitted to hitting Gaffney with a hammer 15 times in the process of stealing her cash and a credit card.

Gaffney's killing is the first homicide in Ulster County this year. But it's the second killing this year in the region with a hammer as the alleged murder weapon; Deposit resident Andrew Hafele currently stands accused of killing 20-year-old Michael Mills with a hammer during a fight on September 17.

The Daily Freeman has led the reporting on the story from the beginning. The newspaper's managing editor, Tony Adamis, wrote the preliminary report of Gaffney's death himself. Adamis caught a load of flack from readers in the comments section of the newspaper for his reporting, which included some background information about Gaffney's own run-ins with the law in recent years.

Many readers felt that information about Gaffney's past had no place in the story about her tragic death. The criticism was heated enough that Adamis wrote a separate blog post explaining the reasons for his reporting:
