Annual Roadside Clean-Up with Frost Valley

On April 16th, 2013, to usher in spring, Frost Valley YMCA employees took part in their 7th Annual Roadside Clean-Up event. The roadside cleanup began in 2006 to give back to the local community and take care of the environment. Says Katia Martin, the Day Camp Director in charge of planning the event this year: "We have a social responsibility to keep our community clean."

Frost Valley considers local community projects and support to be a vital part of its mission. CEO Jerry Huncosky began the Roadside Clean-Up as a way of supporting the local community and tying that with another part of the Frost Valley mission – environmental stewardship.

After litter sweeping Frost Valley's entire main camp, 25 staff members, including CEO Jerry Huncosky, joined together to clean up debris from 14.5 miles of both Frost Valley and Claryville Roads.

CTW presents Connections & Misconnections

After a two year hiatus, Catskill Theatre Works, Inc. returns to the stage with “Connections and Misconnections”, a program of live theater featuring four short comedies about love, marriage, baseball and even … aliens! Kevin Murray and John Willis perform in Victor L. Cahn’s “Bottom of the Ninth”, a touching one act play about two elderly gentlemen from very different walks of life who find common ground in the game of baseball. Ben and Diana Friedell do double duty in Jay D. Hanagan’s “Fancy Meeting You Here”, and “Post-Its (Notes on a Marriage)” by Paul Dooley and Winnie Holzman. The former deals humorously with the angst associated with meeting new people and forging new relationships, the latter with the ups and downs of lifetime commitments. Jay D. Hanagan’s zany comedy about extraterrestrials, “Extra Curricular Activity,” features Al and Kathryn Davino.  Read more

"Janet's Class" to Appear on The Open Eye Screen

Tuesdays at the Theater continues on April 23, at 7:00 pm, with “Janet’s Class,” a documentary film by Dorothy Lyman of Andes.  This film follows a group of New York City retirees through their early preparation, rehearsal, and performance of a showcase directed by veteran stage, film, and TV actress Janet Sarno.  With humor and inspiration, the video looks at aging, and its opportunities for personal growth and fulfillment.

Janet Sarno appeared on Broadway opposite Danny Aiello in “Knockout,” by Louis LaRusso and off Broadway in his “Sweatshop.”  Her TV credits include “All My Children,” and “The Edge of Night”.  Films include “Rock the Paint,” “Reqiem, for a Dream,” “The Hard Way,” and “Power.”

Ms. Lyman lives on her chicken farm in Andes.  Before moving here in 2003, she lived in Los Angeles and worked in television as an actress and director.  In 2006 she produced and directed a film in Delaware County called “The Northern Kingdom.”   She will be present at the showing of her film at The Open Eye Theater, 960 Main Street, Margaretville, Tuesday evening, at 7:00, and will participate in the discussion afterwards.   Read more

Can't you spare $10 to give African orphan girls a real shot at a future?

Across Zimbabwe, girls without any options are forced into early marriage to men who are abusive, unfaithful and, in too many cases, infected with HIV. Zimkids Orphan Trust, run by Dennis Gaboury and Elinor Burkett of Hobart, is changing that. We’re giving them nothing less, and nothing more, than control over their own destinies.

How? “Women’s work” doesn’t get you very far in Zimbabwe, so last year, we trained two girls in welding and building techniques– from laying brick to pouring cement. Now, we’re establishing an expanded version of that program, ZimGirls Welding, and growing it into an independent company for future trainees. And we plan to make it a template for other microenterprises run by, and tailored to, dozens of young women orphaned by AIDS.  Read more

DOCUMENTARY:  FACE OF FARMING AT THE OPEN EYE THEATER

Next on the big screen in Tuesdays at the Theater series at The Open Eye, 960 Main Street, Margaretville, is Ellen Wong’s “Face of Farming,” Tuesday, October 23, 7:00 pm.   This documentary video tells the story of five of the last operating dairy farm families in Delaware County, where once the dairy farming population was among the highest and most productive in the United States.  The video, made in collaboration with Anthony Marizo and Kent Garrett, memorializes the art of working the land and celebrates these families’ commitment to a fast disappearing lifestyle.

“Face of Farming,” created in 2008, was part of a multi-media exhibit at The Roxbury Arts Group in July 2009, and was included in the recent Art & Soul of the Catskills Film Festival 2012 in Delhi.   Read more

Micro News Report - 10th Annual Dog Walk and Fair - Heart of the Catskills Humane Society - Delhi NY

A Micro-Report on this year's Dog Walk and Fair, "Long Live Ruff & Roll" at Legion Field in Delhi.
The Heart of the Catskills Humane Society shelters dogs and cats in the western Catskill region.
They care for those who cannot speak or care for themselves. They educate their community, defend the meekest, teach humane treatment for all living creatures, foster a compassion for the weakest, heal the broken trust of the abused, and link the lonely with a four-legged companion. And they will until they educate every person in the community that spaying and neutering animals is the only humane thing to do, that owning a pet is a commitment for the lifetime of the pet, that abuse or neglect is unconscionable and illegal. And they try to match every adoptable pet with a loving home - every day.

Deposit, Small Town - Big History

The little village of Deposit has often found itself at the crossroads of history.  Deposit sits on the western - most bend of the Delaware River.  For many years, Native Americans used a portage trail that ran from the site of Deposit west over Tuscarora Mountain to the Susquehanna River at Windsor.  This Indian trail was the shortest distance between the two rivers.  Years later, the railroad came through Deposit for much the same reason.

In 1835, construction of the Erie Railroad began on the flats one mile southeast of the village.  The tracks ran west up Tuscarora Mountain to a pass at the village of Gulf Summit.  Because of the steep grades, the Erie railroad used one of the largest steam locomotives ever built as a pusher.  Known as the “Matt Shay” No. 5014, a monument to this locomotive sits at the top of the grade in Gulf Summit today.  Read more

Middleburgh Announces Recovery Plan

From the Village of Middleburgh:

The Village of Middleburgh has launched several new projects included in a program intended to erase much of the damage of Irene. By working on these since April, the Village has been able to start the following:

  • Through a Main Street Block Grant, $150,000 is being distributed to various businesses on and around Main Street. About twenty businesses are benefiting from the NYS grant money, with amounts ranging from $1,300 to $10,000. Trustee Sheryl Adams worked with the Schoharie County Planning Department to complete the project.
  • Middleburgh is offering $50,000 in loans of one percent or less out of the Small Cities Block Grant. All businesses affected by the flood are welcome to apply to the Village for the loans, which will be distributed by a need basis. This was the brainchild of Trustee Bob Tinker.
  • $10,000 from the Small Cities grant money will be set aside to encourage any new businesses, especially a grocery or pharmacy.
  • A dramatic Main Street renewal project. $22,500 from the Main Street Grant will be used for new benches, garbage cans, flags, and other beautification works such as signs, flowers, flags, and the like. The following year, the Village plans on reworking many of the sidewalks along the business district. A new mural under the supervision of Trustee Bill Morton is expected on Main Street by next summer.
  • A full time VISTA volunteer from SALT will be acting as an intern at the Village office. Working 40 hours a week, this volunteer will specialize in organizing the business community, events, and applying for grants. The VISTA partner will aid Middleburgh until the end of August 2013.

"This is a huge step forward," said Mayor Avitabile, "And the entire project will not require any tax increases." Trustee Sheryl Adams had been working on the Main Street grant and is largely responsible for it coming to fruition.

Members of the business community are enthused. This also comes as the Creekside Park project, originally slated for a 2004 opening, has just been completed. With the aid of the Middleburgh Telephone Company, the Village is planning on having the Depot Museum and Badgely Park renovations done by next summer.

These multi-stage rebuilding projects are part of a bigger plan, said the Mayor. "The Governor's office wrote the Village a comprehensive economic plan in 2005, but it was ignored. It's time to get the wheels turning again." Within the next year, the Village will propose a new economic plan, along with SALT and the new Middleburgh Business Association.

Vanishing Educational Icons

Autumn is, of course, a great time to plan a motor trip through the Catskills to enjoy the fall colors.  It is also a chance to explore some of the villages, hamlets, and small side valleys of the region.  Hidden in these mountains are dozens of examples of that most iconic symbol of American rural education, the one room schoolhouse.  Before the automobile, it was necessary that schools be no more than reasonable walking distance for the children living and working on the thousands of farms throughout the Catskills.  A great many of these little buildings are lost to history, but a surprising number remain to be discovered and enjoyed on a day’s outing.

Deposit's second annual Classic Car Show and Cruise

Deposit's second annual Classic Car Show and Cruise was well attended on a beautiful sunny day.  Visitors were treated to a display of cars ranging from model T's of the 1920's to muscle cars of the 1950's, 60's, and 70's.

Lucinda Knaus: New Paintings

Lucinda Knaus

New Paintings

Reception Saturday July 21st 6-8pm at Cabane Studios Fine Art Gallery

Free to the public and refreshments served

Celebrate the season with some great art!!

Show will be on display July 8th- August 12th 2012

Lucinda's vibrant new work reflects her passion for nature and travel. It is a journey through color, form and personal history using layers of imagery in watercolor, ink and collage.

A teaching job in India in 2006 immersed the artist in the saturated color and design motifs that appear in many of her pieces. She uses handmade stencils inspired by fabric designs and traditional Rangoli taught by the Indian women she met there.

“ Painting a bright orange flower may trigger a memory from traveling in India and then begins a visual free association to complete the idea. I am most happy in the intuitive process of creating a work and I desire to evoke a sensation or feeling from the experience.”  Read more

Student Photographer Seeking Interviews

I am a Photograph student at Bard College working on my Senior Project. For the past four months, I have travelled to and from Phoenicia to photograph the hurricane damage and I have tracked the recovery in the news. I would like to get in contact with families, businesses, farms and individuals who would be willing to give me a personal account of what it's like to live in the Phoenicia/Shandaken/Prattsville area today.

Please contact me via email at malinnium@gmail.com.

Chichester Yoga is headed to Rwanda!

See video

At the end of the month, I'll be heading to Rwanda to lead a yoga teacher training at The Ubushobozi Project.  In the evenings, I'll be teaching the National Rwandan Cycling Team. When I leave, if all goes well, the girls will take over my job and be the first local teachers to the team.

This trip is possible because my students donated the money for me to go. Without this incredible community this training would not be happening. So thank you so much for all of your generosity!

When I return I'll be offering the same training here in Chichester. If you want to go deeper into your practice or you want to learn how to teach, email me as we still have room. I also have one partial scholarship available if you are local and one barter available for someone who is tech and marketing savy.  I look forward to serving the community when I return!  And if you would like to donate, it's not too late.  Donations can made on Paypal (Chichester Yoga at yahoo) or via mail.  PO Box 126 Chichester, NY 12416.

Thank you Shandaken, from Douglas Cordo

Douglas Anthony Cordo, the father of Private First Class Douglas Cordo, a soldier who was killed in Afghanistan last week, called us today. After reading about the decision to dedicate Shandaken Day to the legacy of his son, he wanted to share his gratitude with the town of Shandaken. Here's his message:

"I would just like to say thank you to Mr. Rob Stanley and all the people of Shandaken for the support. My son would be proud that they have done so. I'd like to thank them from my whole family. Little Doug was a great kid. He was my hero."

Town of Shandaken dedicates Shandaken Day event to P.F.C. Douglas Cordo

From the Office of the Town of Shandaken Supervisor:

In recognition of P.F.C. Douglas Cordo's sacrifice last week in Afghanistan, the Town of Shandaken will be dedicating their annual Shandaken Day event to Private Cordo's memory. Earlier this week Town Supervisor, Robert Stanley, asked that all flags on municipal properties be placed at half staff in Douglas' memory. In a Dedication Ceremony to take place at 10AM this Saturday, August 27th on the Parish Field Park in Phoenicia, the Town along with members of the local parish and veterans organizations will recognize Private Cordo's sacrifice for his country. Supervisor Stanley will open the Shandaken Day event announcing that the entire day is dedicated in Douglas' memory. Father Mathew Azhkath from St. Francis De Sales Church will read a memorial prayer and members of American Legion Post 950 from Phoenicia will provide a rifle salute in recognition. Helen Cordo, long time resident of Phoenicia and Private Cordo's grandmother, will be in attendance to witness the ceremony along with other members of the community who remember him fondly.
