22-year-old Josh Turan killed in Delhi motorcycle accident

Josh Turan. Photo courtesy of David Turan.

To his friends, 22-year-old Josh Turan was a thrill-seeker: A goofy, fearless kid who liked snowboarding, motocross racing, and parkour, and would rather spend the night outdoors than under a roof.

But when he was killed in a motorcycle accident on Route 10 in Delhi on Saturday, May 12, Turan wasn't doing anything particularly daredevilish. He was driving to Meredith, on his way to see a community-theater production of "James and the Giant Peach" directed by his uncle.

State police said that around 5:30 on Saturday afternoon, Turan's 2001 Triumph was hit by a 2005 Subaru making a left-hand turn from Falls Mills Road onto Route 10. The driver was 48-year-old Betsy Clark of Delhi. Turan had severe injuries from the collision, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating the crash.

The news of Turan's death has been a devastating blow to his family, and to the close-knit community where he was involved in theater and had many friends.

Kingston's thorny crime problem

A 21-year-old Kingston man has been arrested on charges that he tried to burgle a dozen roses from a Hannaford grocery store on Mother's Day by stuffing them into his pants.

Kingston police posted news of the arrest on their Facebook page:

Arrest: Sunday 5/13/12 at 3:20 PM – Herbert D Hill Jr, 21 yrs old (12/21/1990) of 68 Glenn St Kingston was arrested at Hannaford’s for the misdemeanor of Petit Larceny. Hill had been observed by Hannaford’s security taking a dozen roses, concealing them down his pants and then attempting to leave the store without paying for the roses. The roses were valued at $24.99. Hill was processed and released on an appearance ticket to reappear at a later date.

Crime doesn't pay, of course, but we have to salute Hill and his allegedly rose-concealing pants. Getting a single rose into one's pants is no mean feat. Getting a full dozen in there, thorns and all, should be a qualifying event in the Burglary Olympics.

Also, we've been having a very sober and professional exchange on Twitter with the Daily Freeman's Ivan Lajara on this important story:

Sullivan County loses another dairy farm

The notice from Fraley Auction Company, announcing the Friday, May 11 auction of Callicoon dairy farmer Ken Peters's herd, is short and businesslike. But any farmer knows what a devastating tale lies behind this curt announcement:

100 milking, 35 dry, (65 lst & 2nd calf) 25 fresh last 60 days. Averaging 55 lbs in tank, 3.7BF 3.2P SCC 150,000 at the plant. 20 short bred heifers. Cattle have great feet, legs & udders. Ken always bought a good registered bull, these cattle are all bred to these top bulls for years

NOTE: After 3 generations of milking cattle on this farm, Ken has decided to discontinue the milking business.

Kingston's million-dollar sinkhole

In the Daily Freeman today: A sinkhole on Washington Avenue in the city of Kingston is threatening gas, water, and sewer pipes underground, and a city engineer says it could take $1 million to fix it.

Ralph Swenson told members of the Common Council’s Finance/Economic Development Committee on Wednesday that the sinkhole on Washington Avenue at Linderman Avenue, which opened in April, could wind up causing significant damage to the pipes.

Already, Swenson said, a water pipe in the area has sustained some damage and needs repair.

The city has already spent $250,000 on temporary fixes for the sinkhole only to have it reopen, Freeman reporter Paul Kirby writes.

Washington Avenue is currently closed from Linderman Avenue to Route 32 with no end in sight -- a situation that's aggravating at least one SeeClickFix user. The online service allows people to map and report problem spots in their communities.

Daily News: Lack of cell phone service in Andes meant a gruesome death for elderly couple

Today's New York Daily News has an in-depth story about a horrific accident that took an elderly couple's lives in the town of Andes last week.

Arthur and Madeleine Morris, a Manhattan couple who owned a vacation home on Woodland Hill Drive in Andes, died near their own property after their car slid off the driveway and over an embankment on the afternoon of Thursday, May 3.

But neither was injured in the crash. New York State Police investigator Alan Ferrara told the Watershed Post this week that Arthur had died of asphyxiation, probably after he tried to get out of the car and slipped. Madeleine walked to a neighbor's house in an effort to get help, but sustained a head wound while walking through the woods, and died of exposure during the night.

The Daily News reports that Madeleine tried to dial 911 on her cell phone nine times:

Nine times, the call would not go through — so the panicked seniors tried to escape themselves, with disastrous results.

Craig's List catches an alleged lawnmower burglar in Ulster County

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office has finally made an arrest for the theft of a lawnmower and an ATV from a home at 109 South Road in Ruby last June. The cold case got a fresh lead this Monday, when the lawnmower turned up for sale on Craig's List.

Arrested for the theft on Tuesday: 43-year-old Linda L. Newman, of 111 South Road, next door to the scene of the crime.

Ulster County sheriff's deputies report:

Ms. Newman is alleged to have directed another person to remove the lawnmower from the location despite knowing she had no right to do so. No evidence was found suggesting the other person had any knowledge the lawnmower was not Ms. Newman's.

Newman faces charges of petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal solicitation. She was released on an appearance ticket made returnable in the Town of Ulster Court at a later date.
