Flooding forecast tonight for Esopus Creek, Beaverkill

Heavy rainfall across the region today has streams and creeks rising, and a few spots are predicted to flood later this evening.

The Beaverkill near Cooks Falls is predicted to reach minor flood stage later tonight. The river should crest at 11.5 feet overnight -- 1.5 feet above flood stage -- and then drop back down below flood stage by around 8am. Here's the hydrograph showing the forecast:

The Esopus Creek at Cold Brook, above the Ashokan Reservoir, is also predicted to reach minor flood stage tonight. The river is forecast to hit its flood stage at 11 feet around 8pm, and crest at 14.1 feet around 2am. Hydrograph below:

Via NY-Alert: All lanes of Route 9W in Esopus, near the intersection with Black Creek Road, are closed for utility work. According to the alert, the road will be closed for up to 6 hours.

An employee at Ulster County Emergency Communications told the Watershed Post that utility lines in the area were on fire, and that the Esopus Fire Department was responding. We will update this post when we know more.

Update: The road was cleared around 6:10pm.

This Weekend: The world premiere of "Mis en Place," a film about SUNY Delhi's culinary champs

Above: A poster and the trailer for "Mis en Place." [9/20/12: Kent Garrett, the film's director, emailed us last night to tell us that there is a new trailer available for the film. The new trailer is posted above, and the older one is posted below. -- Julia Reischel.]

SUNY Delhi's student chefs are undisputed rock stars in the culinary world.

Twice in the past two years, in 2010 and 2012, SUNY Delhi teams have won gold at the American Culinary Federation's annual national student competiton, a real-life "Top Chef" contest that pits students from across the country against each other as they whip up original four-course meals from scatch. (Some dishes from Delhi's winning 2010 menu: lobster terrine and artisan handmade mozzarella.)

Tornado watch in effect for Catskills region

Cracking down on -- and celebrating -- the Catskills pot harvest

With the local marijuana crop getting ready for harvest, it's also the season for big pot busts.

For three days last week, the Daily Mail reports today, law enforcement officers searched Greene County high and low for illicit pot growers. (Mostly high, we're guessing.)

The results? 515 pot plants found in eight Greene County towns, and 11 arrests either made or pending. Plants were found in Durham, Windham, Coxsackie, New Baltimore, Jewett, Cairo and Hunter.

The sweep was a joint effort between the Greene County Sheriff's Office and other local and state agencies, the Daily Mail reports:

Wind advisory in effect today for Sullivan, Delaware, Otsego counties

The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a wind advisory for the western Catskills region, from 11am until 8pm. Forecasts are calling for sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 40 or 50 miles per hour, possibly greater at high elevations.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are also in the forecast for the region, and could dump as much as two or three inches in some areas. With the region feeling the effects of a long summer drought, a little rain isn't a bad thing -- but watch out for downed trees and power lines on the road this afternoon and evening.

A new toy for local media -- and a leg up for SUNY Ulster

A new collaboration between SUNY Ulster and a private Kingston media center will soon put top-notch video production techniques in the hands of the college's students, and the community.

On August 29, the Seven21 Media Center on Broadway in Kingston proudly announced an $84,000 grant from Central Hudson Gas & Electric for the project. Seven21 -- which bills itself as “upstate New York's ultimate film, video, audio and media production facility” -- is beginning construction on a huge, seamless “green screen” studio, which SUNY Ulster students will learn to use by working alongside professionals in the field.

Route 23 bridge in Prattsville reopened

It's just one lane, but it makes a world of difference to Greene County mountaintop residents: The Route 23 bridge across the Schoharie Creek in Prattsville is back in service once more.

The bridge was abruptly closed to traffic on Monday, September 10 after a state inspector noticed a fracture in a bottom truss.

Town supervisor Kory O'Hara told the Watershed Post that the bridge was reopened to one lane of traffic on the evening of Friday, September 14. With the bridge out of commission, anyone looking to get from one side of Route 23 to the other had to take a lengthy alternate route.

"It was about a fifteen-mile detour," O'Hara said.

Prattsville residents are probably relieved it wasn't longer. When the bridge was closed last week, officials at the state Department of Transportation originally told the Daily Mail that the repairs could take anywhere from "two days to two months."
