When is a fresh peach front-page news? When it's the first one for sale in town in almost nine months. Reader Sharon Skoble Goldstein took these photos today at the re-opening of Freshtown, a Margaretville supermarket that has been closed since the Irene flooding last summer.

Margaretville's Cheese Barrel, gutted by Irene, re-vamps and re-opens

The Cheese Barrel, a cafe and gourmet grocer on Main Street Margaretville, was inundated by Tropical Storm Irene's floodwaters on August 28, 2011. (Full disclosure: The Cheese Barrel is a Watershed Post advertiser.)

Sue Ihlo, the store's owner, moved her cafe across the street and re-opened for business last fall. On Saturday, the Cheese Barrel moved back across the street to its old location, which has been completely renovated with hardwood floors and a new layout. We visited that day to see the new space and took these photos.

The Daily Mail is reporting today that an electrical fire gutted the Matthew 25 food bank in Catskill, destroying refrigerators, freezers and foodstock.

Volunteers have begun clean-up, and organizers report they will relocate, but money and donations are needed. The Matthew 25 food bank, founded in 2009, moved to its current location on Main Street from West Bridge Street last August.

The food bank is accepting donations via PayPal on their website.

Sullivan County loses another dairy farm

The notice from Fraley Auction Company, announcing the Friday, May 11 auction of Callicoon dairy farmer Ken Peters's herd, is short and businesslike. But any farmer knows what a devastating tale lies behind this curt announcement:

100 milking, 35 dry, (65 lst & 2nd calf) 25 fresh last 60 days. Averaging 55 lbs in tank, 3.7BF 3.2P SCC 150,000 at the plant. 20 short bred heifers. Cattle have great feet, legs & udders. Ken always bought a good registered bull, these cattle are all bred to these top bulls for years

NOTE: After 3 generations of milking cattle on this farm, Ken has decided to discontinue the milking business.   Read more

Foodstock at Villa Roma tomorrow

See video

Above: A short, fun look at Foodstock 2010 on Youtube.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful day in the southern Catskills, so perhaps you'll wake up thinking to treat yourself to some cheese.  But, wait!  Cheese makes you think of wine, so you'll probably have to get some of that, too.  What goes great with wine and cheese? Chocolate, so there's another stop on your fair weather journey. Should you want to find all of these things, and about 100 other varieties of foodstuffs, in one place, you can head over to Foodstock, where WJFF has assembled over 60 local vendors for a day of muching and sipping and savoring. Foodstock kicks off at 11 am tomorrow in the tennis building at Villa Roma, in Callicoon.  For more information, visit the listing in our calendar.

Thirty years ago, American beer mostly came in two varieties: bottle and can. Today, the art of craft beer is alive and flourishing, among professional brewers and passionate homebrewers alike. This weekend, the Catskills celebrates the creativity and craftsmanship of New York State's growing ranks of independent brewers, in an annual festival that has become a rite of spring for the region.

On April 28 and 29, thousands of craft beer devotees will descend on Hunter Mountain for the fifteenth annual TAP New York craft beer fest. The festival will feature over 150 beers from over 45 New York breweries. Among the local breweries attending are Kingston's Keegan Ales, Windham's Cave Mountain Brewing Company, Athens's Crossroads Brewing Company, and New Paltz's Gilded Otter.  Read more

Freshtown announces reopening

The owners of the Freshtown supermarket in Margaretville, which has been closed since the Irene flooding last summer, publicly announced today that the store would reopen before June 1. They also say that the CVS pharmacy at the site, which was completely destroyed in the flood, will be rebuilt after the supermarket is open.

The announcement confirms earlier statements made by the company to local officials. Last month, owners Dan and Noah Katz told a meeting of the new East Branch Flood Commission that they would be open by June 1.

The Katzes state in the release that work is moving forward now because of a preliminary settlement on an insurance claim for building damage sustained in last year's floods.

Hanover Farms lawsuit a hot topic at Shandaken town meeting

Town responds to Hanover Farms lawsuit

Hanover Farms, a farmstand in a residentially-zoned area that has been operating in violation of Shandaken zoning law for almost a decade, was recently issued a stop-work order to halt repair work at the site by Shandaken zoning enforcement officer Ritchie Stokes.

The farmstand ignored the stop-work order, and on March 26, Hanover Farms filed a lawsuit against both the town of Shandaken and Stokes personally.  Read more

Trout season begins

Above: The Times Herald-Record films the first cast of Opening Day on the Willowemoc Creek, with Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and actor Olek Krupa joining the crew of eager flyfishers.

April 1 was the first day of trout season in New York State -- and for the Catskills, land of a thousand trout streams, that means our creeks and kills will be prime habitat for anglers in waders from now til October.

That's good news for the Catskills, where many towns are still putting the pieces back together after last year's devastating flooding. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the tourist dollars spent by visiting trout fisherfolk are a vital piece of the local economy in trout-rich parts of upstate New York. YNN of Central New York ran a rather crass, but accurate, headline yesterday: "Trout season starts, money to follow."  Read more
