New York State voters opted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton in the Presidential election on Tuesday; in unofficial results, Clinton received roughly 58.8 percent of the votes cast, while Donald Trump got 37.4 percent.
In the Catskills region -- and in upstate New York overall -- the numbers told a different story. Voters in the four most rural Catskills counties -- Delaware, Greene, Schoharie and Sullivan -- voted decisively in favor of Trump. In more populous (and more left-leaning) Ulster County, Clinton prevailed, taking 51.3 percent to Trump's 42.2 percent.
In the closely-watched race for New York's 19th Congressional District, in which two candidates battled to succeed retiring Republican Congressman Chris Gibson, a similar pattern emerged: Republican John Faso won decisively in Delaware, Greene, Schoharie and Sullivan counties, while Democrat Zephyr Teachout prevailed in Ulster.
Across the 19th district, which includes all of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster Counties, and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer Counties, Faso won with 55 percent of the vote.
