19-year-old Hancock resident dies in apparent hunting accident

On Wednesday, November 9, 19-year-old Hancock resident Brett Sherburne died after suffering a head injury while hunting on land near his home, according to a press release from the New York State Police.

The Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin has Sherburne's obituary. An excerpt:

Brett was a graduate of Hancock Central School Class of 2010. He then attended Alfred State College, Broome Community College and was recently hired as a Salesman at Gault Chevrolet. Brett was a member of Boy Scout Troop 74 and he attended Ryla (Rotary Youth Leadership Conference) in '09. He played JV and Varsity Baseball and Football and he made the first touchdown on Hancock's new field after recovering a fumble. Brett was a passionate hunter, fisherman, and car enthusiast. He also enjoyed trapping, four wheeling, and boating and loved being with his entire extended family. Brett's smile was contagious.

(Hancock, N.Y., November 12, 2011) On November 9, 2011, at approximately 6:15 p.m. the New York State Police in Deposit, N.Y. responded to Readburn Road, Hancock, N.Y. to assist ambulance personnel as they were performing CPR on an unresponsive man. Prior to NYSP arrival, the man was transported to Delaware Valley Hospital, Delhi, N.Y., where he was declared deceased. The man was identified as Brett R. Sherburne, age 19, of 1213 Readburn Road, Hancock, N.Y. 

The ensuing investigation revealed Sherburne had been hunting on land adjacent to Readburn Road prior to his being discovered near the roadway suffering from a head injury.
