Minnesotan YMCA youth worker arrested in Ulster Co. sting

An Ulster County sheriff's deputy, posing as a 14-year-old girl in an AOL chatroom, has caused the downfall of a St. Paul man who worked part-time as an outreach coordinator for homeless youth at a Minnesota YMCA. The Ulster County Sheriff's Department has issued a press release describing how 44-year-old Lawrence E. Nelson corresponded with the undercover cop:

These conversations became sexual in nature, including an offer to have sexual intercourse with the undercover deputy.

A St. Paul Pioneer Press article has more about the arrest:

On Oct. 19, the undercover deputy entered an Internet chat room posing as a 14-year-old New York girl named "Stephie." The deputy received a message from Nelson, who introduced himself with, "hi 44 male here."

He said he lived in Minnesota, asked if she liked older men and inquired as to the extent of her sexual experience. The chat became "sexually aggressive," and Nelson referred to the undercover persona as a "teen" and "young."

In a chat Oct. 28, Nelson said he would force sex on her "even if you said no."

The article adds that Nelson denies propositioning the deputy, and that was engaging in a fantasy that he wouldn't enact in real life.
