Attack at the Catskill Zen Monastery

The state police are reporting an arrest in an unlikely place: a Zen monastery in Sullivan County.

According to the press release, reprinted in full below, a South Korean man named Min Jae Hwang allegedly assaulted a man and a woman on Saturday at the Catskill Zendo, located on Mount Vernon Road in Summitville. Hwang reportedly struck the man with a broken bottle and "forcibly touched and restrained" the woman before a 911 call brought state troopers to the scene.

The New York State Police at Wurtsboro, NY announce the arrest of a Min Jae Hwang, a 42 year old South Korean National, for two counts of Assault in the second degree, both felonies, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the fourth degree, Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree, Forcibly Touching, an Unlawful Imprisonment in the second degree, all misdemeanors, following an investigation of a reported assault at the Catskill Zen Monastery on Mount Vernon Road in Summitville, NY. On 10/23/10 at approximately 11:17pm New York State Police stationed in Wurtsboro, NY responded to a 911 poll of a reported assault at the above location. Troopers arrived at the scene found the victim, a 45 year old male, with laceration and contusions to his head. Investigation revealed Hwang had struck the 45 year old male victim in head with a broken bottle and had forcibly touched and restrained a 38 year old female victim. The male victim was transported to Ellenville Community Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. Hwang was arrested for the above charges and arraigned before the Town of Mamakating Court. Hwang was remanded to the custody of the Sullivan County Jail without bail.
