Crash in Neversink leaves Liberty man dead

On Wednesday December 14th shortly after 7:00am, State Police from the Liberty barracks responded to a report of a head-on collision on State Route 55 in the Town of Neversink. A 2006 Lincoln, operated by Derrick Yerkes, age 34 of Liberty was traveling westbound and drifted into the eastbound lane, striking a 2016 Toyota driven by Cheryl Bertholf, age 56 of Loch Sheldrake. Yerkes was pronounced deceased at the scene. Bertholf was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and is being treated for rib fractures and fractured vertebrae. The cause of the accident is still under investigation and State Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact investigators at the Liberty barracks at 845-292-6600. State Police were assisted at the scene by volunteer firefighters from Grahamsville, Neversink and Loch Sheldrake, Mobile Medic Ambulance, Lifenet helicopter and New York State Dept of Transportation.
