Invasive Species Awareness

By Kiraly, Wed, 11/7/2012 - 3:37 pm

FERAL SWINE? GIANT HOGWEED? WILD PARSNIP?

LEARN WHAT’S “INVADING” OUR REGION

The Lennox Forest Committee, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County and the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership (CRISP) will be hosting an Invasive Species Awareness Day at Camp Shankitunk, Ford Hall, 2420 Arbor Hill Road, Delhi, NY. (also called ‘Back River Road’ from DeLancey), Delhi, NY, on Saturday, November  17,  2012, from 12:00pm to 3:00pm. The program will focus on feral swine, giant hogweed and the pervasive wild parsnip, Asian longhorn beetle and the emerald ash borer. Participants will learn to identify ash trees and participate in a woods walk to “tag” ash trees at nearby Lennox Memorial Forest.

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is responsible for the death of tens of millions of ash trees from the mid-west to the Northeast. More than 7.5 billion ash trees in the United States, including 900 million in New York State, remain at risk.

This program seeks to create public awareness of the invasive species of concern in the local region.  This workshop will teach residents and property owners how to identify ash trees and recognize the emerald ash borer and the damage they do.

Participants will learn about Cornell’s Master Forest Owner Volunteer Program and how these local volunteers offer free visits to help local forest owners get started on managing their woods.

The program will begin at noon with a discussion on species of local concern.  This will be followed by the ash tree tagging on the wooded trails of Lennox Forest. Following the tagging will be a discussion of the damage to expect and what to do once the borer has moved into the local area.

This is a family-friendly, hands-on, free event. There will be snacks and beverages available as well as many hand-outs on Invasive Species. Participants should dress appropriately. If you have any special needs, please contact us in advance. Registration is appreciated. To register for this event or to find out more, call Cornell Cooperative Extension @ 607-865-6531 or email Janet Aldrich at [email protected].

Accommodations for persons with disabilities may be requested by calling Extension by November 10.  Requests received after these dates will be met when possible.  Cornell Cooperative Extension provides equal program and employment opportunities.
