Liveblogging the dairy antitrust hearing

This morning, I left Delhi before dawn to make the four-hour trek to Batavia for a meeting between the state's beleaguered dairy farmers and the Department of Justice's Christine Varney.

I'm delighted to report that there's free wifi at Genessee Community College, and so I'm going to try liveblogging it. It's our maiden voyage with CoverItLive, and I've been up since 5am, so no promises that it'll run perfectly. Here goes.

Historic first in LIVE TWEETING DOJ hearing

Wow, this live tweeting went over well in the farm community. Farmers from Wisconsin called this morning to tell me they were able to follow the Department of Justice hearing in Batavia via live tweeting and/or by reading the transcript later.  Watershed Post.....this was historic and an absolute first for a dairy farmers/milkshed hearing.  Great job, actually....incredible job in setting this all up, especially the links you found for various topics.  Thanks so much!

wow! thanks!

This was an experiment for us--I'd never used CoverItLive before, wasn't sure if I'd be able to get wifi, and didn't know if I was going to be able to hack the 8-hour trip until just a few days before. I'm delighted this was useful to farmers. Hey, if we had a hard time getting to the hearing, it can't have been easy for people who have to milk cows twice a day to get there.

Dairy is historically very important to the Catskills region. There are fewer farms now than there used to be, but some are still hanging on. And local milk is important to New York City, too. We'd like to stay on top of issues in the (mind-bogglingly complicated) world of milk and milk prices, and I'd like to encourage any farmers, especially farmers in or near the Catskills, to write to us with observations and news tips: editor@watershedpost.com.
