Gas drilling uncertainty takes toll on small businesses
Over at Breathing Is Political, Liz Bucar has an account of a recent Delaware River Basin Commission hearing on proposed gas drilling, in which several Pennsylvania business owners said their plans were on hold because of the uncertainty surrounding drilling.
Susan Blenkensap stated, “My neighbor is a lifelong resident. She had a real estate agency for 30 years. She closed her doors because she couldn’t, in conscience, sell property to people when the land is under threat of drilling.”

Sullivan County to residents: Stay put
Sullivan County offices are closed today, the Catskill Chronicle reports.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Sullivan County. A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. In addition, heavy wet snow could also cause scattered power outages across the area.
The Catskill Kiwi digs out
A New Zealander and her paramour battle six-foot snowdrifts in their mountain paradise. Somewhere under there, she swears, there's a car.
Mr Weiss grew up in a snowy place, and is calmly going about trying to find where the car is, The Catskill Kiwi however is a finger push away from instigating my own “Estate of Emergency!”
Grass-fed farmers find markets online
The Boston Globe had a story this week featuring several New York State farmers who sell their grass-fed beef and lamb on the Internet.
With so much buzz about the practices of factory farms, many consumers are looking past the supermarket meat case for animals raised on grass on small farms. For people who want the meat but can’t get to a farm stand, specialty store, or farmers’ market, the Internet makes things pretty simple. Find a farm, select your cut, fill in your information, and submit your order.
For farmers, the article says, selling online is far less labor-intensive than an on-farm store.
