He speaks for the skis

Online ski magazine First Tracks ran a fantastic interview yesterday with Joe Kelly, founder and chair of the Coalition to Save Belleayre Mountain.

The central Catskills region needs the ski area not only to survive, but to flourish. That’s why I became such a fervent advocate. However, it’s not only a selfish incentive; it’s also an egalitarian motivation in that you can see how declining school enrollments, struggling businesses, churches closing, rising taxes, and people moving away for better economic opportunities are all part of a vicious circle. And once again, we’re barely 2.5 hours from New York City!

DEP to get a new data tool

The DEP issued a press release yesterday touting a new $5.2 million computer system that will allow the agency to do more advanced data modeling of the reservoirs. The goal: better water quality, and less flooding. (Hopefully the two go together.)

When completed, the Operations Support Tool will enable DEP to divert or release water from its reservoirs at the best times to guarantee the highest quality water is delivered to New Yorkers and to protect downstream habitat.

The Daily Freeman has an item today about the new system, emphasizing its possible use in predicting and controlling flooding. Reservoir levels have been a hot issue in recent years, and state senator John Bonacic has pressed the DEP to keep reservoir levels low to prevent downstream flooding.

Godwin's Law applies to county board meetings?

Delaware County Board of Supervisors pass resolution opposing a state handgun-regulating bill; threat of Nazis invoked.

Masonville Supervisor Craig DuMond said, “If we give up our Second Amendment rights, it is the beginning of the end.”

Board Chairman James Eisel added, “History tells us what happens if we lose these rights. We all know what happened in Germany.” The resolution passed unanimously and will be forwarded to state and federal legislators.

The bill in question: Assembly 1326.

Godwin's Law: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."
