Remembering Michelle MacNaught

We received word last night that Michelle MacNaught, a gifted 21-year-old SUNY Purchase student and artist from DeLancey, died yesterday.

MacNaught's wood block prints and drawings inspired by her year-long struggle with ovarian cancer were exhibited in a Manhattan gallery last week, and MacNaught attended the opening reception on Tuesday.

Gannett Newspapers published a story about the show yesterday. The reporter interviewed MacNaught:

The Purchase College art student flew into Manhattan on Tuesday to attend the opening at the Leo Koenig Gallery. A helicopter and ambulance were arranged to get her to the event safely from her hometown of Delhi, N.Y. “

It was so much fun,” she said. “I was really excited and very surprised to see all my family and friends there just to support me. It was fantastic.”

MacNaught, 21, sold 13 of 20 original pieces of art at the event and also sold copies of her book, “Michelle MacNaught: Works on Paper.”

Andes fillmaker Erica Hill, who attended the reception last week, said that the evening was "magical." Hill has sent us a moving video interview with MacNaught, which you can watch above.

MacNaught's family is asking that donations be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care
