The Bobcat Byway

After a winter of designing and judging, the Central Catskills Collaborative has chosen a new logo for the newly-christened Catskill Mountains Scenic Byway, the stretch of Rte. 28 that runs from Hurley to Andes.

You can see the winning logo above. According to a press release issued by the Collaborative today, Kurt Boyer's winning design features a bobcat pawprint:

Collaborative Selects Logo for Proposed Scenic Byway

The Central Catskills Collaborative, a group of seven communities preparing a scenic byway nomination for Route 28, has selected the winning logo from a field of 19 designs. “All of the submissions were excellent and exhibited a broad range of creativity and innovation” noted John Duda, a Fleischmanns member of the Collaborative, “and we thank everyone who contributed to this project.” After narrowing the field to six finalists, the Collaborative ultimately selected Kurt Boyer’s logo design which features the paw print of the native bobcat.

“With all the great artwork, the decision was difficult” said Carol O’Beirne, a Margaretville member of the Collaborative. “This design presents a bold image for the Catskills while communicating the idea of a scenic trail.” Boyer, a Catskills native whose graphic design business is located on Route 28, looks to the mountains for inspiration: “We are fortunate to live amongst these beautiful rounded mountains that remain untamed yet accessible to everyone. To me, the elusive bobcat that I've tracked but have rarely seen, represents the untouched wild that is the heart of the Catskills." Boyer will receive $100 for the winning logo and will be recognized at this month’s meeting of the Collaborative. Members of the Collaborative will be working with Boyer to make any final adjustments to the design as they prepare to complete the byway nomination application this summer.

The logo is part of a comprehensive promotion package for the scenic byway that will include printed materials, a website, signage, and the formation of marketing partnerships. This month’s meeting of the Collaborative will focus on strengthening these partnerships by featuring presentations and discussion with each of the counties’ tourism directors. Rick Remsnyder, Ulster County Tourism Director, and Patty Cullen, Delaware County Tourism Director, will highlight the meeting which will be held at the Pine Hill Community Center on Thursday, March 24, 6:00-8:00 PM. The public is encouraged to attend and pizza will be provided.
