Catskills locals are makng a splash among the nation's most avid cinemaphiles at the Sundance Film Festival this week.

David France, the owner of Margareville's Galli-Curci building (appropriately, a former movie theater), is a festival darling with his documentary about AIDS in the 1980s, "How to Survive a Plague." Check out the Sundance Channel's interview with him about the flim above. More info in a Sundance Channel article here.

The Hudson Valley's own Oscar-winning Melissa Leo starred in Predisposed, another Sundance pick, which was produced by BCDF, a Hudson-Valley-based film studio. Quick guide to the Woodstock Film Festival

The Woodstock Film Festival, an annual scrum of stars, artists, directors, documentarians, and film-lovers, descends on locations around Ulster County tomorrow to screen more than 150 films, 60 of which will be premieres of one kind (world) or another (New York). Here's a short list of the films that piqued our interest and that aren't yet sold out. Go to the WFF website for a complete schedule of every movie on offer.

Thursday, September 30

Jeff Reichert's documentary "Gerrymandering," a portrayal of the sleight-of-hand practice known as "redistricting" in the style of a thrilling potboiler. (5:45pm on Thursday at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, with another show at 4:45pm on Saturday, October 2, at Upstate Films II in Rhinebeck.)

Friday, October 1

"Don't Go in the Woods," a "slasher-musical" by Law and Order and Full Metal Jacket alum Vincent D'Onofrio. (8pm on Friday at the Emerson Resort in Mt. Tremper)

Also on Friday: "Sounds Like a Revolution," directed by Summer Love and Jane Michener, which explores modern protest music from the Dixie Chicks to Ani Difranco. Afterwards, Justin Sane of the punk band Anti-Flag will play live. (10pm on Friday at the Bearsville Theatre in Woodstock. Another screening of the movie only will be on Saturday, October 3 at 9:30pm at the Rosendale Theatre in Rosendale.)

Saturday, October 2

If you haven't seen "Marwencol," about Kingston resident Mark Hogancamp, you should. It's won a slew of awards at various festivals already, and now this documentary is having its premiere in New York state. The film shows how Hogancamp, whose brain was damaged in a vicious attack in a Kingston bar in 2000, healed himself by building a shockingly realistic miniature Belgian village set in World War II. (Hogancamp is becoming a celebrity. Esopus Magazine first published images from Marwencol in 2005, and this year the Wall Street Journal profiled him.) (1pm on Saturday at the Rosendale Theatre in Rosendale. Another screening Friday at 2:15pm at the Bearsville Theatre in Woodstock.)

Stanley Fish: Tilting at windmills, part II

Screenshot from "Windfall."

This week, Andes part-timer Stanley Fish, an opinion columnist for the New York Times, weighed in (again) on the controversial topic of wind power development in upstate New York. Fish, a die-hard opponent of local wind power, blasts wind developers for pitting neighbors against each other:

Another result is the splitting of the town into two factions; the long-time “locals” and the “downstaters” or “outsiders” or “latecomers” (you’re a latecomer of you’ve lived there 20 years) who more often than not have the numbers but are weak politically because they are registered to vote in another state.

Former friends and once-friendly neighbors no longer talk to each other. Nasty signs and even nastier words pop up everywhere.  Read more

Another arts venue in Woodstock wants your money

An article in the Times Herald-Record today reports that the Woodstock Film Festival and Hudson Valley Film Commission are raising $600,000 to buy a home for a full-time film center in Woodstock. On their fundraising page for their new capital campaign, the WFF says that the building will

greatly enhance WFF's ability to continue presenting its annual world-class festival. During the 2010 festival, Wednesday Sept. 29 - Sunday Oct. 3, the new Film Center will be used as a central base for operations, box office, souvenir shop, communications and tech headquarters.

The new digs are spaces that the WFF has rented for years: 11-13 Rock City Rd. pictured above.   Read more
