Matchmaker, matchmaker, find me a farm

After graduating from West Point Academy and serving in the army for five years, Julie Zavage pursued a degree in organic agriculture from Colorado State University. Two internships and an apprenticeship later, the 30-year-old is ready to start her own vegetable farm. But Zavage doesn't own land, nor does she have the money to buy it. Leasing land is her only option.

So she turned to Catskills FarmLink, a new local website aimed at connecting would-be farmers with landowners, for help.

“I'm typical of many farmers of my generation,” she said. “We have the desire and ability to do the work and do it sustainably, but we don't have the money to buy the land we need.”  Read more

DELHI, DELAWARE COUNTY, NY --  Unlike a farmer's work day, a farmer's education never ends. Learning and keeping up on the latest trends, science and break-throughs can be a year-round affair. To meet that yearning for learning, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County (CCE) and the Watershed Agricultural Council (Council) are hosting the Catskill Regional Dairy, Livestock and Dairy Conference from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 12 at Sanford Hall, SUNY Delhi.

On Sunday 9/18: Raise the Roof Farm Flood Relief Fundraiser

September 18, 2011 - 4:30pm

Farms across the Catskills were destroyed in the flooding cause by Hurricane Irene and the rains that followed. (Our correspondent, Ulla Kjarval, wrote a story about the fate of local farms for us last week.)

This Sunday, September 18, Lucky Dog Farm and the Hamden Inn, Sherman Hill Farmstead, and the Watershed Agricultural Council are hosting a farm relief fundraiser at the Hamden Inn, located at 35769, State Highway 10, Hamden, NY.  Stop by and lend a hand to a local farmer. We hear that the Stoddard Hollow String Band and the Tremperskill Boys will be in attendance.

Young farmer documentary, "The Greenhorns," to screen at SCCC September 22nd

 LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY - On Thursday, September 22nd, the Gardening Club of Sullivan County Community College will host a screening of the documentary film "The Greenhorns" in the Seelig Theater on campus at 112 College Road in Loch Sheldrake, NY.

 “The Greenhorns” shows how a new generation of young agrarians who farm with their brains as well as their bodies exert a promising and necessary impact against these crises. These greenhorns are working to reverse negative trends in favor of healthy food, local and regional foodsheds, and the revitalization of rural economies, one farm at a time.

The event schedule is as follows:

·         2:30 pm: Local farmers will vend their products and regional advocacy organizations will share local food resources in the theater lobby.

Do You Fondue?

That's today's big question on Watershed Wednesday at 1 p.m. is...Do You Fondue? Denise Warren of Stone & Thistle Farm co-hosts Farm Chatter with Tara Collins of the Watershed Agricultural Council. So really, do you, fondue? To round out the conversation on everything dunkable and dipable, stinky and moldy, creamy and dreamy, the two invited Pure Catskills Linda Smith of Sherman Hill Farm in Franklin, to settle any dipsutes over the best Catskills cheeses. Farms, Folks and Funding: Cultivating Leadership Through Research and Practice

Andy Cheung, P.E. of the Watershed Agricultual Council's East of Hudson Program, is presenting at this conferemce, Farms, Folks and Funding: Cultivating Leadership Through Research and Practice. Andy will share details of a solar pump project installed at a Westchester County farm in 2010. The conference will be held at Inn at the Lake, Canandaigua. Registration is $40 register online.
