Postal Mix Tapes to Feature Woodstock Musicians

Woodstock Music Icons by Didier Cremieux

New York artist Didier Cremieux will present a sheet of Woodstock music icons as part of his Postal Mix Tapes exhibit opening Saturday, October 11th at the Orphic Gallery in Roxbury.  Woodstock Music Icons will be the first in a series of sheets celebrating the legendary Woodstock musical scene and inaugurating a broader project to honor the extraordinary music traditions of the Hudson Valley and Catskills through his Music Stamps Series.

On the first of the Woodstock Music Icons sheets, Didier has included a stellar group of Woodstock musical figures past and present including Paul Butterfield, John B. Sebastian, Levon Helm, Todd Rundgren, and Tony Levin.  The jazz scene in Woodstock is well represented by Thelonious Monk, David Newman, and Jack DeJohnette.  The cosmopolitan nature of the hamlet’s musical world is reflected by the presence of Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar.  All of these aspects of the Woodstock musical landscape will be explored in series planned for future release.

The Music Stamp Series is an on-going graphic project using a postage stamp sheet format as a medium to celebrate music of various eras and continents.   Each stamp sheet, with an introductory poster, pays homage to a specific musical style, making it an illustrated play list and a musical who's who.  Included in this exhibit are signed series of handmade perforated stamp sheets –Inkjet prints on various media, with additional rubber stamp markings; and  limited edition Posters - signed and numbered inkjet prints on Canson 100% rag paper with archival inks.

Postal Mix Tapes will open on Saturday, October 11th, 2014, with an artist’s reception from 5 to 8 pm and will be on display at the gallery until November 30.
