Phoenicia man dies in wood-splitting accident

A 40-year-old Phoenicia man died after being injured by a firewood processing machine in West Hurley on Monday afternoon, the Ulster County Sheriff's Office reports. 

Deputies said Lewis Peck was operating a machine that cuts and splits wood when he became entangled with it, causing fatal injuries. The Sheriff's Office is investigating Peck's death. 

Update, 2/7: A fund has been set up to benefit Peck's fiancee and 14-year-old daughter at the Key Bank in Phoenicia. More details here.
