Orphic Artists at Venice Biennale

Ken Butler and Ed Potokar

Ken Butler and Ed Potokar, two extraordinary instrument makers from New York City, are currently exhibiting in the Prada Foundation Art or Sound exhibit at the prestigious Venice Biennale.  They have returned from Italy where they were invited by curator Germano Celant  to participate in this exhibition featuring leading artists fusing music art including such 20th century titans as Marcel Duchamp, Josef Beuys and John Cage, and contemporary masters Arman and Laurie Anderson.  Art or Sound explores the relationship between art and sound and the way it has developed from the 16th century to the present day, examining the iconic aspects of musical instruments, the role of the artist-musician, and the areas in which the visual arts and music have come together.

At the Orphic Gallery, Ed presented a sample of his exquisite and highly innovative musical instruments in his potophonics exhibit in Roxbury last summer to wide acclaim.  Ken is mounting a show of his hybrid musical instruments, collages, drawings and other works in Instrumental Desire: Strings Attached set to open at the gallery on July 4th.
