Do Look Back - Meet the Performers

On Saturday, December 7th, the Orphic Gallery will celebrate the artists who have exhibited at the gallery during 2013 with a reception and poetic/musical performances from 4 to 7 pm.  DO LOOK BACK will feature the multi-media work of In Flight comprised of the mosaics of Jeanne Ellsworth, music of Robert Cucinotta, and poetry of Sharon Israel, the concert photography of Peter Stupar, the vinyl pop art portraiture of Greg Frederick, the magnificent avant garde musical instruments by Edward Potokar, and musical photos from New York City in the 70s by Allan Tannenbaum.   And for your evening’s entertainment:

Night Sky

This brilliant collaboration between percussionist Michael Suchorsky and pianist David Rissenberg produces highly ethereal music that defies all pedantic generic classifications.  “Compelling and hypnotic” was a description by an audience member of a recent awe-inspiring performance of Night Sky at the Andes Hotel.  They describe their musical encounter thus: “our reactive musical exchanges built sound-sculptures outside of any preconceived structure, often surprising ourselves in their originality.”

Michael Suchorsky has spent decades performing and recording around the world in a wide variety of musical genres; from middle eastern jazz, to microtonal, to punk rock. Michael has played at venues that stretch from CBGBS to the Berlin and Montreaux Jazz Festivals to Lincoln Center. He maintained long standing associations touring and recording throughout the world with artists such as Lou Reed, Soldier String Quartet, jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, and French rock legend Jacques Higelin.

David Rissenberg ’s background is in classical music.  David studied at SUNY Purchase with Seymour Bernstein and in Woodstock with founder of the legendary Creative Music Studio, Karl Berger.  Following a well-received debut at Carnegie Recital Hall, he has performed extensively in the United States and Europe, focusing primarily on the solo repertoire but also along with orchestras and chamber groups.

Zonder Kennedy & Bruce Martin

This duo is very familiar at the Orphic Gallery having performed on the deck with the Scoville Junkies at the gallery’s grand opening in 2012.  Zonder has led an adventurous life ricocheting around the world playing guitar with the likes of John Campbell and Doyle Bramhill, Sr.  But in his solo career Zonder has truly developed a singular, distinctive style combining locally sourced blues with artisanal rock in a scorching musical potage. Zonder will be accompanied by Bruce Martin, a highly accomplished percussionist and multi-instrumentalist who has performed for the past twenty years with The Tom Tom Club and a host of other musical acts including Carly Simon, Dr. John, Cindy Lauper, Andy Summers, Cassandra Wilson, Christopher Walken, Pine Top Perkins, and Bull Moose Jackson.  Zonder and Bruce will play a brief tribute to the one and only Lou Reed, and hopefully a few of their high spirited numbers as well.

Sharon Israel

Sharon Israel has studied poetry with Robert Pinsky, Henri Cole, Lynn Domina and Lee Slonimsky.  Her poetry has appeared in the American Liszt Society Newsletter among other venues, and her work has been featured in Courier-Life publications in NYC, Women’s E News and the Brooklyn Phoenix

DO LOOK BACK will open with an artists’ reception and musical/poetic performances on Saturday, December 7, 2013, from 4-7 pm. Most of the artists in the show plan to be in attendance this gala evening, schedules and weather permitting.  The Orphic Gallery is located at the Roxbury Corner Store at 53525 State Highway 30, Roxbury, NY, at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets.  The exhibit will continue through December 15th and be open to the public during the gallery’s normal business hours, Friday through Sunday, 12-5 pm.

The Orphic Gallery opened the summer of 2012 in the artistic enclave of Roxbury, NY. The gallery exclusively exhibits art related to music including photographs, concert posters, musical instruments, portraits of musicians, souvenirs of musical events, specimens of musical technology, etc.  All work exhibited at the gallery has a definite connection to the world of music, and it features exhibits based on both local music history, and musical traditions from around the USA and abroad.
