Do Look Back - Meet the Artists:

David Bowie by Peter Stupar

On Saturday, December 7th, the Orphic Gallery will celebrate the artists who have exhibited at the gallery during 2013 with a reception and poetic/musical performances from 4 to 7 pm.  The performances will feature Night Sky, an ethereal duo of piano player David Rissenberg and percussionist Michael Suchorsky, Zonder Kennedy and Bruce Martin playing a short tribute to Lou Reed, and Sharon Israel reciting poetry from the In Flight exhibit.  But first the artists …

Except the Dolls

Allan Tannenbaum is a photojournalist from New York City who has documented the cultural life of the city independently and as Chief Photographer & Photo Editor of the Soho Weekly News and Staff Photographer for Sygma Photo News.  Allan’s music photography from the 70s provides a culture window into the legendary downtown music scene and captures performances of the major touring acts of this time.  His intimate photos of John Lennon and Yoko Ono taken 10 days before his murder in December 1980 remain some of the most poignant and iconic photos of this era.

Encore!

Peter Stupar, rock & roll photographer extraordinaire, returned to the Orphic Gallery with this exhibit after mounting the premier show here in the summer of 2012.  Mr. Stupar’s work has chronicled the illustrious history of live music in the San Francisco Bay Area capturing such milestones as The Band’s Last Waltz and the final performance of the Sex Pistols.  His exceptional collection of photographs that is comprised of over 7500 pictures contains iconic images from concerts by the Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Roxy Music, and other luminaries from the pantheon of rock & roll.

Potophonics

Edward Potokar began creating musical instruments during his teenage years in Cleveland and his tenure at the Cleveland Institute of Art.  He has continued ever since through the fabled Ohio punk/new wave scene and in the New York downtown music world.  His most recent New York City exhibit, Soundwall at the JohnHoushmand Projects, was an absolute triumph synthesizing furniture and musical instruments.

Record Breaker

Brooklyn based artist Greg Frederick’s vinyl pop art is inspired by modern-day artists such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Mr. Brainwash.  His pieces are created with broken record vinyl, their sleeves and packaging and other recycled materials.  In his first professional show, his work appeared next to Andy Warhol silkscreens at The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art.  Greg has shown since at many group exhibits in New York City and at a solo exhibit in Las Vegas besides his splendiferous show in Roxbury.  His first solo exhibit in Manhattan will open on December 5th at the MIDOMA Gallery.  He also gained another breakthrough this year with a commission from the Queen of Rock, Courtney Love, to design tour couture.

In Flight

The In-Flight artists Jeanne Ellsworth, Sharon Israel, Sharon Israel and Robery Cucinotta are all from Roxbury and collaborated on this multi-media tour de force. Jeanne is a mosaics artist who uses exclusively odd bits, leftovers, found objects, and thrift store treasures; she doesn’t cut shards to shape but rather works with the unique ways that different materials break.  Sharon Israel is a poet and singer who has performed extensively in New York City and upstate.  Her poetry has been recently featured in Chronogram and Green Door, and she hosts a poetry show on WIOX radio.  Robert is a composer of concert and theater music exploring both experimental and more traditional styles.  His most recent work includes a new CD Divertimento for Mr. Brooks inspired by Freddy the Detective by Roxbury’s Walter R. Brooks and scoring the hit musical Dracula for the Shandaken Theatrical Society in Phoenicia.

DO LOOK BACK will open with an artists’ reception and musical/poetic performances on Saturday, December 7, 2013, from 4-7 pm. Most of the artists in the show plan to be in attendance this gala evening, schedules and weather permitting.  The Orphic Gallery is located at the Roxbury Corner Store at 53525 State Highway 30, Roxbury, NY, at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets.  The exhibit will continue through December 15th and be open to the public during the gallery’s normal business hours, Friday through Sunday, 12-5 pm.

The Orphic Gallery opened the summer of 2012 in the artistic enclave of Roxbury, NY. The gallery exclusively exhibits art related to music including photographs, concert posters, musical instruments, portraits of musicians, souvenirs of musical events, specimens of musical technology, etc.  All work exhibited at the gallery has a definite connection to the world of music, and it features exhibits based on both local music history, and musical traditions from around the USA and abroad.
