Buy Locally, Think Globally – Zimkids Benefit

Girls Welding Class - Adrian Suskin Center for Zimkids

With all of our individual consumer choices we have an impact – in however an infinitesimal way – on the local, national and international economy.  Decisions to purchase locally sourced products in Roxbury and the Catskills in their aggregate can and will positively affect the local economy and enhance the development of local businesses.

The Roxbury Corner Store is dedicated to promoting local artists and producers by providing a market for local goods and services.  We also recognize that we have the opportunity to advance the cause of locally-based individuals and organizations that are endeavoring to make an impact in places far afield from Roxbury.  The Zimkids Orphan Trust is one of those organizations.

Dennis Gaboury, resident of Hobart, founded an orphanage and school in Zimbabwe, the Adrian Suskin Center for Zimkids, in an effort to improve the opportunity for children in this country ravaged by internecine war, poverty, starvation and medical crises to have a fighting chance to obtain their basic needs – food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and establish an element of stability to afford the children education and training so they can lift themselves out of the economic abyss in order to pursue healthy and productive lives.

The Zimkids Orphan Trust that now oversees the function of the orphanage and school raises part of its operating funds by selling dolls and wire figurines fashioned by the children around the world.  Back in Zimbabwe, Dennis distributes 100 percent of the proceeds from the dolls and figurines to the 200 orphans at the center in the form of food, school fees, clothing, medical supplies, or whatever else a given child needs.

The Roxbury Corner Store is very pleased to announce that on Friday, November 29th, the most celebrated shopping day in the USA for the year, The Roxbury Corner Store and Orphic Gallery will be hosting a benefit reception to raise money for the Zimkids Orphan Trust and to raise awareness of what all of us can do in our consumer practices to make changes in economic conditions both here and afar.  The guest of honor at the reception will be Tinashe Basa, the Director of Zimkids Orphan Trust, who is visiting Roxbury from Zimabwe.

Dennis and Tinashe will be presenting a short video about the Trust and will talk about the work they do to improve the lives of the children they serve in Zimbabwe.  It is Tinashe’s first visit to the United States and the final stop in a five week fundraising tour of the country that included presentations and skype video between Zimkids and schools from New York to as far away as Fairbanks, Alaska.

Your support of Zimkids through your doll purchase helps ensure that each and every child receives the personal care that they need.  For some of the orphans this means extra food, tutoring, or a pair of shoes. For the older members of Zimkids, the trust provides job training, since economic empowerment is one of our priorities.

Thank you for considering this consumer option.
