Ed Potokar with Mark Schaaf and Michael Suchorsky - The Stumpf Fiddlers 3

The Potophonics exhibit at the Orphic Gallery continues to attract an enthusiastic stream of visitors to the Orphic Gallery in Roxbury.  This stunning retrospective of the career of Ed Potokar opened in a wildly successful fashion to a highly appreciative audience.  At the opening, the Audio Artists performed a number of intriguing sets and were joined by an array of inspired players throughout the evening.  Very popular witht the overflow crowd was the acoustic performances on the stumpf fiddles - and so, on to Spillian for the Re-Birth of the Stumpf Fiddle!

RE-BIRTH OF THE STUMPF FIDDLE: A WORKSHOP AND CONCERT FEATURING ED POTOKAR

Saturday August 24

Workshop & Dinner 1 - 6 :30 PM

Concert: 8 PM

A folk instrument that morphed from the rhythm sticks of Central European music, stumpf fiddles look like a what would happen if a bluegrass band, a covey of clowns, and a hiker all collided. A soundboard, bell, horn, cymbals, and any other marvelously silly noise-making instrument are appended to a walking stick and played with a drumstick or by banging the whole contraption on the ground. Or pretty much however you want to. There aren’t a lot of rules in the world of the stumpf fiddle.

We will be creating our own versions of these delightful instruments in a celebration of the far more elegant work of artist/instrument maker/musician Ed Potokar, and the last week of potophonics – a stunning retrospective of his career currently on display at the Orphic Gallery in Roxbury NY – which features his exquisite turn on sonic totems and an astounding array of string and percussive instruments.

For the workshop/concert on August 24th, during the day Ed will lead a workshop on instrument making, first making a presentation on the process of creating his marvelous works from conception through execution, then guiding us as we contrive our own stumpf fiddles from materials provided by Spillian or from the surrounding woods.  In the evening, Ed and some of his friends from the NYC new music scene will lead the group in making beautiful stumpf fiddle/sonic totem music together in a brilliantly irreverent jam session.

Come and birth your own stumpf fiddle! How have you lived without one?
