The Orphic Gallery in Roxbury, NY is pleased to announce the opening on Saturday, May 25th, 2013 of a new exhibit RECORD BREAKER featuring the work of Greg Frederick, an artist from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who fashions portraits of rock & pop icons from shards of vinyl record albums and covers. His work embraces the pop spirit of Andy Warhol and the street ethos of Banksy and Shepard Fairey.
RECORD BREAKER will open with an artists’ reception on Saturday, May 25, 2013, from 4-8 pm. The Orphic Gallery is located at the Roxbury Corner Store at 53525 State Highway 30, Roxbury, NY, at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets. The exhibit will continue through June 2013 and be open to the public during the gallery’s normal business hours, Wednesday through Sunday, 12-5 pm.
Greg Frederick is from Phoenix, Arizona, where he developed aspirations to become an artist with influences as diverse as Courtney Love and Warhol. He studied photography in London for 5 years and continues to work as a music and fashion photographer whose clients have included Lil’ Kim and Hole. With his interest in street art, Frederick has also worked on murals, most notably Mother Kim at the Danny Screams Studio in Brooklyn. But it’s his exceptional collection of music inspired portraits executed in recycled vinyl that will be exhibited at RECORD BREAKER at the Orphic Gallery.
While experimenting with printing his photographs on canvas he started adding pieces of found objects including fragments of vinyl records to the images. He began outlining the visages and rendering the features of his subjects in shards of vinyl. Eventually he began removing the printed images from the canvasses leaving the portraits fashioned solely from the vinyl pieces. These exceptional likenesses remarkably arise from the fragments of the vinyl painstakingly cut and arranged to form the iconic images.
With Vinyl Pop Art, Greg Frederick has developed an extraordinary portfolio of luminaries from the musical world ranging from Amy Winehouse and Notorious Big to John Lennon and Jim Morrison. He also works on commission and recently executed an amazing portrait of local bluesman Zonder Kennedy. Frederick exhibited at the Strivers Garden Gallery in the “eMerge: Danny Simmons & Artists on the Cusp” exhibit last summer and he had his first solo show at Get Up Gallery in Las Vegas in August 2012.
Greg Frederick’s unique portraiture has created a considerable buzz in the alternative art world. The Orphic Gallery opened the summer of 2012 in the artistic enclave of Roxbury, NY.
