Maywood Arts is pleased to announce the opening reception of "Down Home, Bucolic Blue" an exhibit by Alannah Farrell on Saturday, June 16th, from 6-8pm at the Schoolhouse, 10770 County Road 23, Sidney Center, NY.  Alannah Farrell grew up in Sidney Center and moved to NYC in 2006 to attend The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.  This exhibit features a series of photographs and paintings with imagery that was culminated over a six-year period spanning the artist’s teens to young adulthood in New York City.  The series delves into the lives and narratives of a fictional cast of characters living in Western upstate New York.  Imprecise outlines of history, autobiography, memory and homage are combined with verdant, cloudy landscape to form a sense of place — both real and unreal. A version of "Down Home, Bucolic Blue" was shown during the winter of 2010 in Manhattan, New York.  This show will be installed at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Sidney Center, NY. The gallery is housed in the former Sidney Center School, the elementary school that Ms. Farrell attended, also within close proximity to the location of many images included in the show.

This summer Maywood Arts will host a six week series of 5-day intensive hands-on workshops for artists at the Schoolhouse.  Working under the auspices of the Greater Maywood Rural Community Services Inc., they hope to restore the once vacant elementary school into a meeting and learning hub for the community.  "Down Home, Bucolic Blue" is the first exhibit of the 2012 season at the Schoolhouse Gallery. "Featuring the artwork of Alannah Farrell seemed like an appropriate starting point for the gallery", says art instructor, Barbara Gregson.  "Not only does her work tell us a bit about a young creative person, but it is reflective of our community, too."  The public is invited to the opening reception at 6pm with an artist's talk at 7pm.  For more information about this show or the Maywood Arts workshops visit www.maywoodarts.org or call #607-369-4916.  For a schedule of events at the Schoolhouse in Sidney Center visit the Greater Maywood at www.gmrcs.org or call #607-369-2745.
