Winter Weekend Activities at the Commons

A delicious and fun filled afternoon is awaiting you at the Commons Building this weekend. “Pay What You Want” Lasagna Lunch is back by popular demand from 11:30 – 1:30pm. You Eat What You Want......& You Pay as much as you want to for either vegetable or meat lasagna and bread from Mary’s Cookin’ from Roxbury. Be sure to come early and bring your appetite because this is usually a sell-out event. Lunch will be followed by a reading from the Open Eye Theater and the opening reception for the annual “Artists Choose Artists” invitational show at the Longyear Gallery from 3-6pm.

Last summer, The Open Eye Theater produced a program of twelve ten-minute plays collectively called “Summer Shortcuts.”  Three of those plays were written by local playwrights Wilma B. Mazo, Barbara Quintero, and Albert Verdesca.  “Summer Shortcuts,” ran for two weekends in August, and was to have had a closing matinee on August 28, but Tropical Storm Irene had other ideas.    Now, several months later, those three plays may be seen upstairs at The Commons in Margaretville, following lunch on Saturday, January 14:  “The Name of the Game” by Wilma B. Mazo is a play about an extraordinary audition.  Directed by Barbara Quintero, it features Laura Battelani as Mrs. P. Eveval and Bill Piervincenzi as Casting Director. “Fresh Pasta” written and directed by Albert Verdesca, explores the relationship between a mother, a daughter, and the man of the family.  Performers are Patricia Brannen as Giulia and Melissa Day as her daughter Elda.  “Unemployment Line” written and directed by Barbara Quintero looks at two young actors as they wait their turn to sign up for unemployment.  Melissa Day plays Susan and Barbara Morrow plays Ellen. Production Coordinator for the program is Laura Battelani.  Open Eye Producing Artistic Director Amie Brockway says, “These plays are little gems—funny and clever, every one.  What fun it will be to do them at the Commons!”

The Longyear Gallery presents the 2012 Annual Invitational Show “Artists Choose Artists” with an opening reception from 3-6pm. “Every artist in the Gallery invited their favorite artist to participate in this show which also functions as our annual benefit event,” says gallery member and manager, Gerda van Leeuwen. “We are very excited to have 24 guest artists which include; Marcia Clark, Cynthia Dantzic, Joy Episalla, Lisbeth Firmin, Daniel Galliduani, Louise Guerin, Zena Gurbo, Oneida Hammond, Richard L.
