An Inventory of Subtlety and Suspended Birds Sep 23 - Nov 6

Chace-Randall Gallery proudly presents new works by Meredith Rosier and Sharon Wandel September 23 – November 6 2011. The exhibition is comprised of drawings in conte crayon, pastel, gouache and ink by Ms. Rosier and sculpture in bronze and steel by Ms. Wandel. A Reception for the Artists is Saturday, September 24, 5 – 7 p.m.

Meredith Rosier’s drawings hover between exactitude and vagueness. Employing tonality to sustain an apprehension of the picture plane and slow the process of categorical recognition, she courts a dialogue of abstraction. “This new body of work examines the effects that movement has on form as I draw the subtle changes enacted upon shape when it is changed by motion.  However delicate or small, these gestures in space are implied in each work: Tilt, Hover, Wobble, Juggle. "I study these subtle movements with intention in my drawing,” says the artist.

Rosier studied drawing at Yale University School of Art and holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. She was mentored by Jacob Landau and Irving Petlin, Paris. She was awarded residencies to The Winchester School of Art, Winchester, England; The Tangier American Legation Museum, Morocco, Vermont Studio Center and the Lacoste School of Art, France. Her drawings are collected by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Philadelphia; the Weatherspoon Art Museum, NC; Arkansas Museum of Art (Drawing Collection), Little Rock, AK; Italian Consulate Collection, Italy; and The Tangier American Legation Museum, Morocco; among others.

Sharon Wandel’s sculpture is created in wax, cast in bronze, and highly finished with a wide variety of patinas. The work employs abstract figuration based on life forms and archetypal images and often incorporates bits of still life and landscape. “This current series deals with the multiplicity of metaphors related to the Bird throughout history,” says the artist. Many of Wandel’s pieces may be placed in or outdoors. A fine abstract painter, as well, her canvases will backdrop the array of sculpture.

Ms. Wandel was schooled at the Art Students League and Arts International, Institute, NYC; SUNY, Purchase;  and Columbia University. Her awards include the National Sculpture Society, National Academy of Design, Audubon Artists-Chaim Gross Foundation and Allied Artists, NYC.
She is collected by the Westinghouse Corporate Collection, Pittsburgh, PA: Art Students League Permanent Collection, NYC; National Academy of Design, NYC; and the Housatonic Museum, Bridgeport, CT, among others.

A permanent exhibiting artist at Chace-Randall Gallery since 2008, this is Ms. Wandel’s first featured exhibition at Chace-Randall. “Viewers will enter the gallery, pass through, circle around, choosing their own path through  a myriad birds then enter a world of indeterminate images on paper. It will be magic,” says gallerist Zoe Randall, adding that, as always, each of the gallery’s 16 permanent exhibiting artists will also have wall space.
