In case you missed yesterday's third-quarter tax deadline...

The IRS is giving you a break if you live in Sullivan, Ulster, Greene, Delaware or Schoharie county this year, with a special Hurricane-Irene tax deadline extension. Normally, third-quarter estimated tax payments would have been due yesterday. Now they are due on October 31. Our apologies for not noticing this sooner.

Here are some detailas, excerpted from the IRS's press release:

The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. For instance, certain deadlines falling on or after Aug. 26 and on or before Oct. 31 have been postponed to Oct. 31, 2011. This includes corporations and other businesses that previously obtained an extension until Sept. 15 to file their 2010 returns, and individuals and businesses that received a similar extension until Oct. 17. It also includes the estimated tax payment for the third quarter, normally due Sept. 15 ...

Catch of the day

When towns flood, all the household appliances, hay bales, and contents of grocery stores and pharmacies end up downstream. Riverkeeper has posted some proof of that axiom on its Facebook page today (see photo above), in a new feature it calls "Catch of the Day," which highlights "notable things we pull out of the river:"

Today it's a household hot water heater we found just north of the Tappan Zee Bridge. This species is NOT native to the Hudson.

Letter to the Editor: "Too much of the same-old, same-old" in Ulster Co. DA's office

To the Editor:

We’re now hearing there will soon be a second indictment of a Kingston Police Department (KPD) officer, this time a retired one.

It looks like getting to the bottom of KPD corruption will require a full investigation, and it ought to be done by an independent group, not local officials. Despite the close connections between the Police and the District Attorney’s office, the Ulster County DA has yet to recuse himself in the Tim Matthews case, even though he’ll be a witness in that case.

There is something that doesn’t add up about the Ulster County DA. We’re supposed to forget costly economic crimes like the huge cost overruns for the Ulster County Jail, where no one was indicted. And then there was the abuse of employees and procedures at the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency, which hasn’t been investigated. Too much of the same-old, same-old is going on here for me.  Read more

Letter to the Editor: A new DA in Ulster County is needed

To the Editor:

It’s almost been a year since we learned that Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency’s chief executive was fired after employees complained about bullying, sexual harassment, documents being falsified, improper storage of waste materials and unsafe work conditions.

Apparently. some of those concerns were investigated by the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, which supposedly found no immediate evidence of criminal wrongdoing but said the state Attorney General’s Office should be brought in to investigate. The trail goes cold here. Am I the only one wondering what happened?

Add this to the non-investigation of the Ulster County Jail cost overrun debacle, and you get a picture of a local District Attorney’s Office that is either distracted or dismissive of serious crimes that affect taxpayer pocketbooks in a big way. It’s time for a change.  Read more

Letter to the Editor: Jon Sennett for Ulster County DA

To the editor:

I was elated to hear that Jon Sennett is running for Ulster County District Attorney. I am a partner in a large Mid-Hudson law firm, but years ago as Assistant DA in the Bronx, it was Sennett who trained me, on-the-job in one of the toughest crime fighting jurisdictions in the country.

Jon Sennett trained me how to interact with detectives, uninformed officers and onlookers at homicide scenes, to protect evidence and witnesses, to assist in finding criminals and to insure successful prosecution for the killings. He also trained me to turn every stone, follow every lead and to build a powerful case backed by meticulously pieced puzzles of evidence and to make sure testimony was tight and facts were accurate. Moreover, he trained me how to break down the defense in the court room with decisive cross-examination of defendants and defense witnesses.

It was Sennett who trained me to have compassion for the victims of crimes by dedicating each day working diligently in investigations to ensure justice was served. I  Read more

Letter to the Editor: Phoenicia is open for business

Dear Editor:

Phoenicia is open for business, and wants to welcome everyone back to our lovely town. But, to many who live far afield and read the New York Times, a recent article questioning Phoenicia’s location in a flood plain, may have served to conjure up an image that our town was wiped out by Hurricane Irene. That is not the case. All the Main Street businesses are open, and the buildings are safe. One of our two bridges is not yet repaired, so access to town is via the “Eagle” entrance off Route 28, or from the Old Plank Road. One can still eat at all of the restaurants, and enjoy the stores and galleries. The tubing season has ended, and the Catskill Mountain Railroad is running a 5-mile service between Boiceville and Mt. Tremper.  Read more
