Kingston's thorny crime problem

A 21-year-old Kingston man has been arrested on charges that he tried to burgle a dozen roses from a Hannaford grocery store on Mother's Day by stuffing them into his pants.

Kingston police posted news of the arrest on their Facebook page:

Arrest: Sunday 5/13/12 at 3:20 PM – Herbert D Hill Jr, 21 yrs old (12/21/1990) of 68 Glenn St Kingston was arrested at Hannaford’s for the misdemeanor of Petit Larceny. Hill had been observed by Hannaford’s security taking a dozen roses, concealing them down his pants and then attempting to leave the store without paying for the roses. The roses were valued at $24.99. Hill was processed and released on an appearance ticket to reappear at a later date.

Crime doesn't pay, of course, but we have to salute Hill and his allegedly rose-concealing pants. Getting a single rose into one's pants is no mean feat. Getting a full dozen in there, thorns and all, should be a qualifying event in the Burglary Olympics.

Kingston's million-dollar sinkhole

In the Daily Freeman today: A sinkhole on Washington Avenue in the city of Kingston is threatening gas, water, and sewer pipes underground, and a city engineer says it could take $1 million to fix it.

Ralph Swenson told members of the Common Council’s Finance/Economic Development Committee on Wednesday that the sinkhole on Washington Avenue at Linderman Avenue, which opened in April, could wind up causing significant damage to the pipes.

Already, Swenson said, a water pipe in the area has sustained some damage and needs repair.

The city has already spent $250,000 on temporary fixes for the sinkhole only to have it reopen, Freeman reporter Paul Kirby writes.

Washington Avenue is currently closed from Linderman Avenue to Route 32 with no end in sight -- a situation that's aggravating at least one SeeClickFix user. The online service allows people to map and report problem spots in their communities.

At a lofty price of $1, it won't be the biggest item in Ulster County's budget. But the purchase of a state-owned property at 67 Wurts Street in Kingston to provide veterans' housing is a big priority for Ulster County executive Mike Hein.

Hein announced today that state Senator Bill Larkin will be sponsoring a bill at the county's request. The bill will authorize the state Commissioner of the Office of General Services to transfer the ownership of the property, which was previously used as an Ulster-Greene ARC group home for people with developmental disabilities, to the county for $1.  Read more
