Fatal car accident in Esopus

21-year-old Daniel Hughes of Highland was killed yesterday in a one-car accident on Route 9W in Esopus.

Mid-Hudson News reports that Hughes was the son of an Ulster County sheriff's deputy.

A press release from the New York State Police:

 State Police at Highland are currently investigating a one car fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred in the Town of Esopus, NY. At approximately 9:15am State Police Highland patrols responded to a 911 poll for a rollover motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of State Route 9W and Burroughs Rd. The initial investigation revealed a 2004 Cadillac, operated by DANIEL HUGHES, age 21, of Highland, NY was traveling northbound on State Route 9W and lost control while passing an uninvolved vehicle. After losing control, the vehicle crossed the southbound lane striking an earth embankment and came to rest on the driver’s side.  Hughes, who was wearing a seatbelt, was extricated and transported to St Francis Hospital where he later expired as a result of his injuries. Troop F Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and is reconstructing the accident. Anyone who may have witnessed this accident is asked to call the State Police at Highland – (845) 691-2922.
