The Freeman reports today that Saugerties couple Debbie Bundschuh and Rick Gailor narrowly escaped an early-morning fire that destroyed their house on West Saugerties Road.

The hero of the story is Max, a two-year-old German shepherd, whose barking woke the couple and made sure they got out of the house before it was too late.

“The dog started barking and we woke up; the house was full of smoke,” said Bundschuh. She said the couple and the dog ran from their home at 322 West Saugerties Road and immediately called 911.

By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the 111-year old house that had been in the Bundschuh family for 67 years was “fully engulfed,” said Bundschuh.
