Accident on Thruway in New Paltz kills one, injures five

28-year-old New Jersey resident Yamil Mendez was killed on the New York State Thruway in New Paltz yesterday, when a tire failure caused the SUV he was driving to flip over. Five passengers were also injured. From the New York State Police:

The New York State Police are investigating a one car fatal motor vehicle accident occurring on the New York State Thruway earlier this date.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:45 am northbound on the Thruway in the town of New Paltz, Ulster County N.Y. The investigation found that a 1998 Ford SUV was travelling northbound when it experienced a tire failure which caused the vehicle to loose control and overturn several times. The male operator of the vehicle was ejected, causing fatal injuries.

The operator and five passengers were transported from the scene by New Paltz Rescue to St Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie NY. The male operator succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The five other occupants were treated at the hospital for minor non-life threatening injuries. The operator was not wearing a seat belt.

No other vehicles were involved in this accident.

Deceased is YAMIL MENDEZ, age 28 of Patterson NJ.

The injured are identified as: YADIRA DURAN, age 21 of Patterson NJ, KELVIN ROJAS-HERNANDEZ, age 18 of Patterson NJ, ANI NUNEZ, age 21 of New York NY, LUIS NUNEZ, age 18 of New York NY, JHORMY RAMIREZ, age 25 of Patterson NJ.
