Phoenicia gets tough on water

Daily Freeman correspondent Jay Braman Jr. reports that after this season's back-to-back floods in Phoenicia, plans to prevent the Esopus from flooding is finally getting some traction:

State Sen. John Bonacic discussed flooding problems on Tuesday with town of Shandaken Supervisor Rob Stanley, regional state Department of Environmental Conservation official Bill Rudge and representatives from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the office of Ulster County Executive Michael Hein.

“We reached an agreement ... where the Department of Environmental Protection can help design some flood-prevention work, and the Department of Environmental Conservation can expedite the approvals,” Stanley said. “The hope is to have the work done within a month.  The proof will be in the results, though. Those results cannot come soon enough as far as the people of our community are concerned.”
