Two Delaware County Farmers Join Regional Watershed Board

At its first meeting of 2012, the Watershed Agricultural Council welcomed two Delaware County farmers to its Council of Directors. Gwen Deysenroth, of Bye Brook Farm (Bloomville), and Wayland "Bud" Gladstone, of SW Farms (Andes), joined the Council's 16-member board which oversees governance, fund development and policy creation. Young farmer documentary, "The Greenhorns," to screen at SCCC September 22nd

 LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY - On Thursday, September 22nd, the Gardening Club of Sullivan County Community College will host a screening of the documentary film "The Greenhorns" in the Seelig Theater on campus at 112 College Road in Loch Sheldrake, NY.

 “The Greenhorns” shows how a new generation of young agrarians who farm with their brains as well as their bodies exert a promising and necessary impact against these crises. These greenhorns are working to reverse negative trends in favor of healthy food, local and regional foodsheds, and the revitalization of rural economies, one farm at a time.

The event schedule is as follows:

·         2:30 pm: Local farmers will vend their products and regional advocacy organizations will share local food resources in the theater lobby.

·         4:30 pm: Screening of "The Greenhorns" (50 min) begins.  Read more

He surprised us with some strong opinions about what he called "country sappy stuff."

Watershed Post: What will you talk about at the conference?

Bruce Baker: My area of expertise is sales and customer service: what to say and how to use language that entices people. It’s following the four distinct phases of a sale, and improving the visual merchandising. I find that these farmers' markets that are just starting up, someone brings a card table and flops some garlic on it on top of a tablecloth with a crazy calico print on it. Building upon the success of the 2010 Farm to Market Connection, with over 150 in attendance, each of the day’s workshops will feature local farmers, regional buyers and agricultural advocates.  Planned workshops will address increasing sales success at farmers’ markets, production of local grain and flour, connecting with community groups through buying clubs, whole carcass marketing of local meat and recent policy developments related to regional food infrastructure.  Read more

Producers, processors and purchasers of local food are invited to the Farm to Market Connection March 21st from 9 am to 5 pm at the CVI Building at One Cablevision Center in Liberty, NY.  Organized by the Pure Catskills Buy Local Campaign, the event will serve as both an educational and networking opportunity for key players in local food across our region.  The day will include panel discussions featuring farmers and business people from across New York State, workshops related to direct-sales marketing of farm products, a lunch of local food and an afternoon tradeshow for farmers and buyers.  Read more

Nine Regonal Farmers Awarded PURE CATSKILLS Educational Scholarships

WALTON, NY -- The Watershed Agricultural Council, with funding from New York City Environmental Protection, recently awarded $3,500 through the Pure Catskills Education Scholarship Program to nine regional farmers to attend various workshops, seminars and conferences to expand their knowledge and improve their farm's bottom line or product offerings. "These awards are offered to Pure Catskills members on a competitive basis," noted Challey Comer, the Council's Farm to Market Manager who oversees the Pure Catskills buy local initiative. "These scholarships cover educational expenses related to developing new products or improving production methods.  Read more
